St. Paddy's, Jackson Style

The Mal's St. Paddy's Parade, held March 17 this year, is widely considered one of the most successful and popular public events in Mississippi. The event regularly attracts more than 60,000 locals and tourists to participate in the festivities and brings upwards of $7 million into the local economy.

Debi Green

Debi Green's job is to bring businesses together to improve the economy and quality of life for the greater Jackson area. Green began working with the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership in 1985 and is now the executive director of membership, sales and retention for the partnership.

Eating History

If you're looking for a way to improve your mind while you satisfy your mid-day hunger, look into History is Lunch, a lecture series from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. All sessions are free to the public with water and coffee provided. All you need to bring is yourself and your lunch.

Sandra Murchison

Sandra Murchison, chair of the art department at Millsaps College, began a project on the Mississippi Blues Trail two and a half years ago, focusing primarily on the Delta. She makes etchings, impressions and rubbings of markers on the trail, which commemorate locations, people and moments important to blues culture and history. She then turns them into 3-D mixed-media art projects that tell some of the stories behind the historic sites.

Mariquita Lewis

In 2008 Mariquita Lewis moved to Richland from Jackson to take care of her mother after she had a stroke. Her concern for her mother's health, as well as the organic movement she saw in Minneapolis as a college student inspired her to start an urban garden.

Justice, Faith, Power

For some people, February means king-cake season. In the South, a king cake is like a cake-sized cinnamon roll, usually with purple, green and gold icing. Traditionally, a king cake has a small trinket inside (usually a baby), but due to choking hazards, some bakeries put the trinket on the side.

Unemployment Down Again

Unemployment figures in the United States continued their downward trend last month from the most recent high of 10.2 percent in October 2009.

Stephen Ekunwe

Stephen Ekunwe, a biology professor at Jackson State University, has recently been named a fellow of the African Scientific Institute. The ASI Fellows association is an international group of accomplished academics, researchers, and business people in the fields of science and technology. The association elects individuals to membership and recognizes each fellow for excellence in his or her field and gives awards for distinguished achievement. There are currently 553 ASI Fellows from 41 countries.

James Farrar

James Farrar, treasurer and director of daily affairs for the Mississippi Justice Party, joined the movement in December 2011. He was dissatisfied with the state of the country, especially in politics, both on the Republican and Democratic sides. He believed elected officials were merely following the letter of the law and forgetting about ethics and the people they represented.

Shirley Williams

Shirley Williams, executive director of the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project, is preparing her organization to face a 31 percent funding reduction in 2012 after Congress recently voted to reduce funding to legal-aid programs.

Susan Ainlay Anand

Flora native Susan Ainlay Anand, a licensed art therapist, and treasurer of the Art Therapy Credentials Board, is leading a series of creative workshops in the Hederman Cancer Center at Baptist Health Systems (1225 N. State St., 601-948-6262) starting Monday, Jan. 9 from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Steve Guyton

Steve Guyton, 63, has been involved in Mississippi politics for more than 40 years. He has worked on numerous campaigns and with countless public officials including Sen. Roger Wicker, former Rep. Chip Pickering and Rep. Gregg Harper. Guyton is currently the shared congressional staffer for congressmen Wicker and Pickering. His duty is helping students nominated by congressmen get into military academies such as the United States Military Academy at West Point or the United States Naval Academy.

Tatiana McDonald

Tatiana McDonald had modest beginnings when she arrived in the United States from Bogota, Colombia, eight years ago. "Before I entered the nonprofit world, I was always trying to make a living cleaning or babysitting, like most of us do when we come to the United States," McDonald says. "My first job in the nonprofit (as a legal assistant) was what made me want to do more. I was always trying to know more and more about the struggle immigrants face once they get here."

Ineva May-Pittman

One of Ineva May-Pittman's greatest current concerns is the process the Jackson school board uses to select a new superintendent. She feels the people who should be making the decision are left out of the process.

Carl Jackson

On Dec. 8, recording artist Carl Jackson joined more than 30 other local performers featured on the Mississippi Country Music Trail. The trail, similar to the 140-member strong Mississippi Blues Trail, celebrates Mississippi's rich heritage of country music legends and chart toppers. Jackson's marker unveiling will take place during the annual "Home for Christmas Concert" at the Strand Theatre, 118 South Church St. in Louisville, Miss.

Jamie White

The Jackson Police Department recently recognized Officer Jamie White for apprehending a pair of armed-robbery suspects. JPD named White the Officer of the Month for October. He received his award alongside Officer Daniel Elam, who accompanied White during his investigation and received a certificate of commendation.

Creating Respect on the Road

They follow the rules of the road, they stop at all stoplights, and they do their best to create a respectful atmosphere between cyclists and motorists. The Jackson Bike Advocates are ready to take another community bike ride. "It is an opportunity for the two to see each other in a positive light, learn and interact." Melody Moody, president of Jackson Bike Advocates board, said.

Ignite the Night

Flappers might seen doing the Charleston at the Roaring '20s-themed gala at the Mississippi Children's Museum (2145 Highland Drive). The museum hosts the annual Ignite the Night Gala Saturday, Feb. 11. The event is for adults only and allows attendees to get in touch with their inner children and explore the museum and all its fun exhibits after normal hours.

Michele Purvis Harris

On New Year's Day, Michele Purvis Harris becomes both the first female and the first African American to serve as public defender for Hinds County. Senior Hinds County Circuit Court Judge Tomie Green appointed Purvis Harris, the present special assistant city attorney for Jackson, on Nov. 18. Purvis Harris replaces William LaBarre, who was public defender since October 2005. She is already thinking of what she intends to do when she is officially appointed.

Thomas Roots

From the time he was elected Mr. Best Dressed in both middle and high school, Thomas Wayne Roots knew he had a future in fashion and design. "I've always liked clothing, design and all-around beautiful things," Roots says. "(In school) I gravitated to that kind of thing, and it eventually turned to the design aspect."

Angela Taylor

Angela Taylor grew up in a family that taught her to help others and be an independent thinker. "My parents were active in the Civil Rights Movement," she says. They helped establish an integrated hospital waiting room in Wayne County, and named each of their children after people in the movement.

Abigail Phillips

Abigail Phillips, 22, recently came to Jackson to make a difference. As a service member of Food Corps, a national non-profit organization, she builds and tends school gardens, helping children learn about whole foods and balanced diets.

Saving Grace

The striking red front door and the bright red and white-striped domed cover above it sets the house apart from others on the street. The building is one of five that makes up Grace House, the largest transitional housing facility in Mississippi for homeless people with HIV/AIDS of three in the state.

[Hero of the Year] Sgt. Reginald L. Cooper

Following a childhood incident in which he encountered a police officer with a terrible attitude, Sgt. Reginald L. Cooper vowed that he would become a police officer himself and would never behave like the officer he met that day.

Jessica Bryant, branch supervisor at the Fannie Lou Hamer Library in the Golden Keys Activity Center, really enjoys working with kids.

Zoo Plans Dream Night

On June 4, the Jackson Zoo will host a special event in collaboration with St. Dominic Hospital called Dream Night at the Zoo. This exclusive event allows children with special needs and their families the opportunity to tour the zoo outside of the busy daytime hours. The children also enjoy a number of events customized for them in addition to touring the zoo.
