FARISH STREET FEATURED IN FORTUNE MAGAZINE!
This is in the brand new issue of Fortune folks so its not up in the Search engines yet, In case you've looked. Spread the word. This sticks it right in the face of those Jackson naysayers. Please Pass it On! Here's the press release below.
[Kamikaze] Shut Up and Listen
I went to "The Vagina Monologues" last weekend, and it turns out that it wasn't that bad after all. After I was "told" I would be going, I prepared myself for all of the "controversy" and "profanity" that I was supposed to hear.
SOUL FOOD FORUMS @ WED LUNCH AT PEACHES: THIS WEEK, CHOKWE LUMUMBA
"Soul Food Forums" at Wednesday Lunch at Peaches continues this week with Ward 2 City Council Candidate, Chokwe Lumumba. This will be an excellent opportunity to come vet your council candidates(which in a way are just as important as your mayoral candidates). Even if you DON'T live in Ward 2, all of the councilmen will implement policy for the entire city so you need to know where ALL of them stand.
[Kamikaze] Show Up, Jackson
"Those that succeed are the ones that show up" is a mantra that I live by and practice. It is the simple premise that one's mere presence can be a positive influence or driving force to action.
[Kamikaze] The Party is Over
Last Tuesday was a historic event, one that many of my elders never thought they would see in their lifetimes. An African American became president of the United States. We are indeed blessed to have witnessed what could be the paradigm shift for which we have waited for so long.
Memories of "Best Of" ‘09..Reaching Back and Moving On…Here's Why
A lot of people have asked, or called, or emailed asking me about my "acceptance speech" Sunday night. It seems as if a lot of folks didnt quite catch it over the low rumble of a room full of ecstatic(and drunk) party-goers. You've all been witness to my life transition over the past 2 years. Trips abroad to the Czech Republic and Ghana coupled with becoming an investor/owner in Farish st., starting the Jackson Progressives with the big homie Matt. and getting engaged to my best friend in this entire galaxy and love of my life have changed my focus. I have a new passion. Rebuilding this city. Making this city what should have always been but couldnt be because of underachieving leadership, apathy, the fear of change, and the fear of youth. And to me a "rapper" is not going to be able to spark the change that this city needs. Whether fans of my music, my columns, or my activism, Im at a point now where I want to seen as more than just a "rapper". Hip hop is something I DO its not what I AM. It doesnt define me and it doesnt limit me. Ill admit I was a little sad awwwwww:-( that even after you guys have watched and supported me in my new career as a developer that you saw as still...a rapper. Im indeed honored to have garnered your votes and support as "Best Hip-Hop" artist for the past 3 years. But as of...well..now, Im removing myself from contention for the award in the future. Im hoping to you believe in me enough to see me as "Best Public Figure", or "Best Community Acitivist", or "Best Rebel Rouser". Im no longer the Hip-Hop aritst who happens to be a developer and activist, but the Developer and Activist who happens to do Hip-Hop.
"Soul Food Forums" Continues Next Wed Jan. 28 @ Peaches with Robert Johnson
Two candidates down...many more to go. Our "Soul Food Forums" at Wednesday Lunch at Peaches have been a rousing success. The candidates are getting grilled by concerned citizens and enjoying some good soul food. I must say again that this mayoral election is VERY important and its crucial that you get to hear what ALL the candidates have to say and what they stand for! (Regardless if you're voting for them or not). We cannot have an uninformed voting public like in times past. PLEASE show up and ask questions, voice concerns, and be heard.
WHERE ARE THE NAYSAYERS NOW?
Its really interesting to note the silence from Jackson bashers as it regards to last week's opening of the convention center. The usual vitriol spit on the Clarion Ledger's blog site was almost non-exsistent after it was reported that over 20,000 Mississippians(not just Jacksonians) attended the festivities. The hating that took place in the days and months leading up to the grand opening were replaced by an almost defeaning silence on sunday morning. I guess its really hard to find fault in a truly successful event that attracted 20,000 people, went into the evening, and ended without one crime reported.
[Kamikaze] Time To Shine in '09
It's a new year, folks! A new year brings new experiences and wisdom, but also new challenges.
"Soul Food Forums" Begin at Wed Lunch @ Peaches Jan 14
In JxnPro's ongoing mission to get the citizens of Jackson more involved in the political process, we will begin adding a special element to our Wednesday Lunches at Peaches. "Soul Food Forums" will be a vehicle in which voters can get intimate face time with local candidates. Whether they be mayoral or city council candidates beginning January 14th, you will have the chance to personally ask them questions AND enjoy some of the best soul food in the south.
[Kamikaze] Moving On to New Things
I hate moving! If I had to make a list of my least desirable things to do, moving would be just above being held hostage in a Cambodian prison camp and getting a prostate exam from a blind doctor.
[Kamikaze] Battling the Holidays
Living in the greatest country in the world has its obvious advantages, but sometimes it's difficult living with the utter intolerance of some of its citizens. This is most evident during the holiday season.
[Kamikaze] One-Way Metro Street
I often hear the term "metro Jackson" bandied about, more so in recent years. We have a "Metro"center Mall. We even had a "Metro" Jackson Chamber of Commerce (now called the "Greater" Jackson Chamber Partnership). But I often find myself asking, "What does the term 'metro Jackson' really mean?"
A Funny Thing Happened To Me Downtown Last Friday….
...ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! Attended the Blocktober Halloween Party on Congress St. and had a blast. No one got shot, stabbed, robbed, raped, assaulted, or any of the like. Whats still frustrating is the fact that residents of the Plaza building and organizers of the event got more of those dirty looks, strange emails, and snide remarks about the "safety" of downtown. Of course, not being privvy to the REAL statistics we're still being held hostage by the perception of out-of-control crime in downtown. Especially when in actuality its the safest place in the state. I was disappointed to hear that the Southern Starz Talent Show(that was supposed to have 10 week run at the Alamo theatre) had to relocate because contestants complained that they didnt want to come downtown. Despite the fact it wasnt dark at 7pm and there were two JPD officers outside the event every week. SAD! Whats even sadder is that citizens are apparently dont even feel safe WITH police presence! Its as if they feel the criminals will just mug you right in front of them. AAARGH!
Is Mississippi Ready For A Black Governor?
So. America has elected its first African-American President. But while other parts of the country clearly were getting over the race hurdle. It appears the south particularly, Mississippi and Alabama, remain decades behind the curve. The south reamained a sea of red despite increased numbers for the Democratic Candidate. As the winds of change sweep across The U.S. The only thing I can see now that would be as earth-shattering as a Black President would be for MS or AL to elect a Black Governor. But are we ready? MS has yet to elect an African American to a state ofc. Can we ever turn this state blue? Or better yet, will this state EVER elect a Black man Governor. And an even better question is, of the available talent who could run next election?

Benefit for Serenity Lane(Child with Luekemia) Tues. Sept 9th 8pm @ Electric Cowboy
You guys know Im all about the kids!
I was asked by friends of the mother of young Serenity Lane to perform at a benefit on her behalf tomorrow. Im appealing to the entire JFP nation to open your hearts and simply show up! If you have kids as I do, I KNOW each and every one of you would want others to assist you in your time of need. Serenity needs valuable, almost life-saving procedures that cost a LOT of money. Without it, who knows what could happen. It has put upon my heart to appeal to all of you to come and donate to the cause. There will be great entertainment and your cover will go to Serenity's family for here medical expenses. Its THAT important. Ive even put aside my disdain for that damn rebel flag and my personal ban of patronizing any place that flies it to do this. So if I can find the time and heart...YOU CAN TOO.
Greetings From Accra: Day 4 in Africa
Greetings from across the Atlantic to all of you. Of course I would have loved to have checked in with you guys sooner but internet access is not nearly as available here as it is in the states. And its SLOOOOOW. I feel like the two turtles on the comcast commercial LOL. But I digress. Its day 4 of my tour of West Africa and let me say the trip has been an eye-opener. Dare I say that as an African-American man THIS trip has been even more life-changing than our trip to New Bohemia last year. So let me catch you up to speed. The flight was a long one. I quickly learned that Accra is a much more traveled city than Prague because our transatlantic flight was full. Phingaprint and I fought for space in our seat but made the best of it. Flying out of New York it was interesting to see the huge African population that resides in NY and make the trek back and forth to their homeland.
Some Things Should Be Off-Limits. Period.
I don't care that it's standard political practice. It doesn't matter to me what tradition dictates. Some things should be off limits. Period. Wife, kids, family, personal lives and the like should not be fodder for the pundits.
An Open Letter to Jackson: The Old, Next, and Now Generations
I'm torn. I wrote in my column this week that it is indeed a great time to be alive. These days will be recorded for posterity, and stories will be told to generations not yet here about the year 2008. The year that an African-American and a woman both ran for the presidency of the United States. The year that Jackson saw what $750 million looks like at work. The year that we had a spirited debate on NOT whether we would build a civil rights museum, but WHERE to build the museum. The year that my generation rose up and said NO MORE! We want in! I felt change had finally come to Mississippi.

The Hip-Hop Mayor: Detroit's Kwame Kilpatrick?
http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=18826
Apparently Mr. Kilpatrick's gotten himself in quite a quandry. Again something that has nothing to do particularly with his policy but all the same. Since he ran on a platform of being a child of the hip-hop generation, appearing on Detorit hip-hop stations and what not. Will they try to blame this latest debacle on hip-hop? funny editorial today on xxlmag.com. Check it out:

[Kamikaze] Blame It On Hip-Hop ... Again
I ran across a column last week from Foxsports columnist Jason Whitlock. He had some interesting comments on the death of Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor.

[Kamikaze] Something's Rotten in the City of Jackson
Something stinks in Jackson. After some careful sniffing, the foul stench seems to be emanating from the downtown area—specifically Farish Street.
[Kamikaze] Old-Fashioned Butt Whoopin'
Well folks, you've had a week to let it sink in. The results are back and statewide the Dems took what I'd call an old-fashioned butt whoopin'! Only Jim Hood made it out of the fray unscathed. From the top down we've bought ourselves four more years of the same old thing. Folks are comfortable with the same old thing especially when the "new" thing doesn't present any concrete plans.
Urgent: Town Hall Meeting Thursday Nov. 15th 6pm @ Smith Robertson Museum
This meeting will be primarily to get the public involved in the fiasco that is the Farish St. Development project. This will be an opportunity for concerned citizens and long-time members/residents of the Farish St. community to voice their concerns about the status of
Senate To Investigate "Mega-churches" and the Pastors Who Run Them.
The senate annouced yesterday that they will be asking several so-called "Mega-churches" to come before them and answer some questions about their financial practices. On CNN yesterday, several pastors of those churches were asked to respond, but Atlanta's Creflo Dollar was the only one to come forth and give any comments. Dollar, the owner of TWO. not one, but TWO Rolls Royces and a sprawling mansion says in so many words that nowhere in the bible does it say that you should not be prosperous. What do yo think of these "mega-churches"? and the flashy pastors that run them? do you even agree with "state" interfering with "church" business. What are your thoughts?
"Dog" Chapman does the talk-show Circuit: Your thoughts on the "controversy"
Duane "Dog" Chapman has been making the rounds lately on news talk shows trying to salvage his show or his dignity(take your pick) after his son released an audio recording of him spewing racial epiteths about his son's African amercian girlfriend. Is he truly sorry? Or just sorry he got caught and had his cash cow yanked from under him? I saw him on both Larry King and Hannity and Colmes where he fought back the waterworks...He seemed contrite enough. Sounded more convincing than Michael Richards lol. What are your thoughts?
[Kamikaze] The Lesser of Two Evils
By the time you read this column, we will have elected a new governor (or re-elected the same governor). Now if you're reading this and asking yourself, "There was an election Tuesday?", don't be embarrassed. You're part of a large group of uninformed, or unmotivated, Mississippians.
[Kamikaze] When Will They Learn?
It's another "biting-off-our-nose-to-spite-our-face" episode in the city of Jackson. I just read that rapper-turned-author C-Miller (formerly C-Murder)—brother of the "great opportunist" Master P—was in town to promote a new work of fiction. However, a teacher pulled up some of Miller's lyrics and decided to halt his appearance, thus thwarting yet another opportunity for kids to hear from someone well qualified to school them on the ills of going down the wrong path.
[Kamikaze] Lapel Pins of Our Countrymen
America needs an enema. Symbolic "patriotism" is blocking the very strides that we are supposed to be making as a "progressive" country. It is giving us mental constipation. Real action, real fighting and real revolution have been replaced by slogans, country songs and, of all things, lapel pins.
[Kamikaze] We Are Awake Now
Do you really want to know why we're mad? I'll tell you why, although it should be painfully obvious:

And I believe he did us proud!!! Like him or not. but judge for yourself. You can choose to go right to these articles or just google "David Banner Congressinal Hearings" to see feedback from all over the world on yesterday's hearings.

[Kamikaze] A Call To Arms
For nearly a month I traveled over 4,000 miles, spanning two continents. I made new acquaintances, gained new fans and learned things about myself and the world that I will take with me forever. I toured an entire country away from friends and family only to return to what I like to call that "good ole hometown love!"
BREAKING: Kaze Suspended from Kim Wade Show for Anti-Bush Comments.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hip-hop artist and activist Kamikaze of Jackson, MS, was suspended indefinitely from the Kim Wade Show on Jackson's WJNT-Talk radio (1180 AM) for anti-Bush comments. Following a monthlong tour of the Czech Republic, Kamikaze was set to return as Wade's co-host, but was informed just moments before going on the air. The reprimand, which stemmed from one angry listener, was based on comments Kamikaze made in his JFP blog and in his column in the Jackson Free Press.
Week 4 in the Czech Republic: Revelations
By now if you're reading this Ive already made the gruelling flight back to the states and have touched down safely in Jackson. Reading some of the responses to my last blog post, it apparently will be to a few people's chagrin LOL.
[Kamikaze] The Chip on Czech Shoulders
Since my arrival in the Czech Republic, I've been getting abreast of Czech politics and a lot of the lightning-rod issues that folks here have to deal with.
[Kamikaze] Letter From the Czech Republic
Greetings, all. It's my second week across the pond in the Czech Republic, and my body is still on Mississippi time. I've tried to intimate to people how physically demanding touring can be. Five shows in five days in five different cities. My muscles haven't ached this much since my football days.
Week 3 in the Czech Republic: Right-wingers would call it Treason!!
Greetings again from across the pond. We've finally gotten over the hump, and the countdown is on until my return home to the states. And with the work we still have yet to put in, it's gonna go fast! The hardest part and the biggest crowds await me at the Hip Hop Kemp festival next week. Four shows in two days in front of literally 15,000 screaming hiphop fans. WOW! Rest assured the Czech Republic will know that MISSISSIPPI has been here when we leave!
David Banner vs. Al Sharpton: It just hit the fan!
Have you guys seen this? David Banner has called Sharpton a permed-out pimp. And here is the response from one of Sharpton's spin doctors: ""From time to time we do encounter people that have sexual fantasies about Reverend Al Sharpton, but they are always women and Crump's proposition is a first." WOW! LOL I leave home for a few days and all hell breaks loose!!!
Week 2 in the Czech Republic: Feelings of Inadequacy
Greetings all. Its my second week across the pond and my body is still on Mississippi time. Ive tried to intimate to people how physically demanding touring can be. For those that thinks its just fun and games, think again. Five shows in five days in five different cities. Shows that were either one, two, or two and a half hours away from home base(Prague). Couple that with a grueling 45 minute set inside of a hot club and then emerging tired at 5am to temps of 40-45 degrees(yes, summer nights in the Czech Republic are COLD!!!). Then imagine seeing the sun rise when you're trying to recover and get some sleep but then you've got a radio interview or meet and greet at noon and your body still thinks its 5am!!! My muscles havent ached this much since my football days.
