JFP Top 25: Week 10

Undefeated teams are dropping like flies. After this past weekend, only six undefeated teams remain. One undefeated team is guaranteed to fall this week when LSU travels to Alabama in a huge showdown.

Mississippi has a long and rich sports history. The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame was created to protect and showcase the history of sports in our state. Michael Rubenstein was one of the driving forces behind the hall. The only executive director the Hall of Fame has ever had, Rubenstein passed away in his home yesterday.

Malik Newman

The Callaway High School boys' basketball team is going for their third championship in four years this Saturday. The team plays at 2:45 p.m. against Wayne County for the 5A Boys title.

On Jan. 5, some of the best high-school football talent descended on Orlando, Fla., for the 2012 Under Armour All-American game. This game started in 2008 under the sponsorship of athletic clothing and shoe company Under Armour. Athletes were showcased to a national television audience, and several even declared their college choice during the game.

Last season was historic for the Jackson State Lady Tigers softball team. Under first-year head coach Rick Fremin, the team won more than 20 games for the fourth time in program history. More importantly, the Lady Tigers won their first Southwestern Athletic Conference softball championship. JSU received a bid to the Alabama regional and faced the Crimson Tide in their opening game. The Lady Tigers lost two straight games, however, ending their season.

College football is back this week, and the games count for real. Every game matters in college with no preseason games.

If Mississippi State is going to have success deep into this basketball season and play deep into the NCAA Tournament, they will need Renardo Sidney. The temperamental star's story is well documented.

Ole Miss was on a three-game losing streak to Mississippi State at home in C. M. "Tad" Smith Coliseum. The Rebels were on a six-game losing streak overall to their in-state rival Bulldogs.

A large portion of Mississippi will root for the New Orleans Saints this Saturday. Certainly, the residents of the capital city will hope that Drew Brees and company win the franchise first road playoff game.

JFP Top 25: Week 5

LSU continues its march to a showdown against Alabama in November. Both teams have big tests in the way; Florida plays the Tigers and the Crimson Tide this month. We'll see plenty of other big tests played out this month including Wisconsin vs. Nebraska this weekend.

Deville Smith was born in Jackson in 1991 and grew up to become a star basketball player at Callaway High School. He averaged more than 20 points and added four rebounds with four assists per contest during his senior year.

High School Basketball Championships Begin Today at the Coliseum

The Mississippi Coliseum once again hosts the Mississippi High Basketball Championships beginning today (February 25) until March 5. Both the boys and girls championships in each classification will be decided over the next week.
