High School Basketball Championships Begin Today at the Coliseum

The Mississippi Coliseum once again hosts the Mississippi High Basketball Championships beginning today (February 25) until March 5. Both the boys and girls championships in each classification will be decided over the next week.

Two teams from the North and two from the South will meet up and set up the North versus South championship game. Teams heading to Jackson to play for the championship feature some of the best players in the state.

The Jackson metro area has several teams competing at the Coliseum. In 3A Boys, Velma Jackson will play Corinth in their quest to reach the championship game.

Lanier (an annual participant) and Forest Hill in the North will compete for the chance to possibly meet Provine in the Boys 5A Championship Game. Small school power house Piney Woods will compete in the South 2A bracket.

Girls' basketball also features a few teams from the Jackson area. Lanier could face Callaway in the 5A championship game if both can win their bracket. Callaway features guard Alisa Ross, whom the JFP recently profiled.

In 6A girls, Jim Hill and Northwest Rankin will square off in the South bracket for the right to meet the North winner.

Anyone looking for good high-school basketball can look forward to a week's worth of great games, and I urge everyone to support high-school athletes.

If you cannot make it to the games you can check out the brackets at the Mississippi High School Activities website. Good luck to all the teams involved, and enjoy this moment.

Provine will have to dig deep to get past Wayne County while my favorite, Lanier Bulldogs, will need to beat Forest Hill just one more time to advance to the championship game. I'm sure that Forest Hill will not lay down, so it should be a classic nail-biter. Go Bulldogs! Come out and support high school basketball. Question: Do the schools that make it to the Big House see anything added to their athletic budgets? MHSAA - Just asking?

I am not sure if the schools get any money but I would have to guess that after the bills are paid each school gets a cut if there is money left over. I will look for anwser on that.
