Fire up your computer and start doing research. It is time to fill out your NCAA brackets and win your office pool.

Surprise, Surprise

One reason I love sports is that the stories tend to write themselves. As the NFL Playoffs begin to reach the final three games, the storylines jump out of the TV screens at me.

Drafted, or Not

The NFL Draft is over. In case you missed where the Mississippi players went, here is a quick analysis of players who were drafted and others who signed as undrafted free agents.

Man of Steel

After running marathons for 30 years and competing in 13 Ironman triathlons in 10 years, for Brandon resident Darryl Lehtola, a trip to Kona, Hawaii would fulfill a dream that started in 1984: to compete in the Super Bowl of Ironman events, the Ford Ironman World Championship held every October in Kailua-Kona (or Kona for short), on the big island of Hawaii.

Is Age the Problem?

Fans of fall and winter sports might enjoy the current NFL and NBA seasons, but next year that all could come to an end. Both leagues face potential lockouts after the current seasons end.

College Sports vs. Academics

When people find out I'm a sports writer, they tend to ask similar questions. Most ask my opinion about this team or that player. But, every now and then, someone asks me about what I think is one of the most intriguing subjects in sports: the effect of college sports on academics and economics.

C-USA Tournament Begins

On Wednesday, Trustmark Park, home of the Mississippi Braves, becomes home to the Conference USA Baseball Tournament.

Wendi Reed

Rick Fremin, who became coach of the Jackson State University women's softball team in January, does not hesitate naming the on-the-field leader for the Lady Tigers. "Without question, one player I feel does not get enough media hype or exposure is Wendi Reed," he said.

The Duel in Dallas

After months of hot practices, two-a-days, preseason games, 16 regular-season games and battles against injuries, only two teams are left standing on the verge of immortality.

Blondes vs. Brunettes

When I was young, I used to love to visit my grandparents who lived next door. Granddad loved to watch sports.

30-Second Advantage

Just before her junior year in college at Delta State University, around 1999, now the love of my life and bride, Lacey, met a young man while working at a summer job. He offered to show her around because she was new to the area and transferring from Hinds Community College.

Rick Comegy

Coaching football is the one profession where the common question is "what have you done lately?" Jackson State University knows the answer to that question. Coach Rick Comegy led Jackson State to a 9-2 regular season record with a 7-2 SWAC record to earn a two-year extension.

Will They Show Up to Play?

Oxford and Starkville haven't had much to cheer about this football season. Ole Miss and Mississippi State have both struggled on the gridiron. Last weekend, highly ranked opponents blew the Rebels and the Bulldogs off the field again.

Happy New Year. No matter how good 2011 was, here's to an even better 2012.

[Bryan's Rant] Hazardous Hazing

When people think of hazing in college, I am guessing that the Greek system comes to mind for most. The press has written and talked about sorority and fraternity hazing for a while now, although colleges and universities have tried hard to end hazing in the Greek system.

Barry Bonds vs. Kobe Bryant: One Story Matters A Lot More

Two sports stories dominated the landscape yesterday.

One was the non-conclusion/conclusion of the Barry Bonds steroids trial. The other was the non-apology/apology by Kobe Bryant for a homophobic slur.

[The Slate] The Best In Sports In 7 Days

Whitney Houston sang one of the best national anthem renditions, ever, at Super Bowl XXV. She is gone, but her anthem will live on forever.

JFP Bowl Schedule: Week 3

The third week of the bowl schedule features the majority of the games including Mississippi State. As always, my picks are included. By now, I am sure to have been completely wrong.

British ‘Baseball'

Two rabid sets of fans fill the stands, each side cheering loudly. A world championship is in reach, and the fate of a bitter rivalry is at stake for both teams. Clinging to a five-run lead as the game nears the end, a pitcher is about to deliver the biggest pitch of this event.
