ht>Incumbent Aims to Finish What He's Started by Adam Lynch

Harvey Johnson Jr. (D) - Mayor/Incumbent

"I love this city and the people who live here – all of the people – and I love this job. Love is about making a long-term, lifelong commitment to work tirelessly for the wellbeing of those you love – to work through the tough times and celebrate the victories together. And believe me, there have been plenty of both of those over the past seven and a half years."

JFP Unveils Amped-Up 2006 Capitol Blog

Jan. 1, 2006—The Jackson Free Press has blogged about the state Legislature since we launched three sessions ago. This week, we introduce our even better JFP Capitol Blog just in time for the return of the state Legislature. This will be the definitive site for breaking news and daily coverage of the Mississippi State Legislature, as well as commentary by JFP bloggers and special guests involved in the issues. It is also a one-stop portal for the JFP's in-depth coverage and analysis of Mississippi politics and policy-making. Also don't miss Rep. Erik Fleming's JFP blog, where he is answering questions from citizens about news and actions in the Legislature and his own record.

Dems Challenge Melton's Residency

ht>This story will appear in the print edition of the Jackson Free Press on Wednesday. by Adam Lynch

Hands Off Our Printing Presses

May 24, 2006 How to Help Save Local Media I met Marilyn, perfectly dressed and wearing her lipstick, on a late Friday afternoon. And Mike, who ponders with his head in his hands. There were the Blake brothers, looking worried and stressed with their parents on a well-earned vacation to Italy. And Jimmy and Gretchen sitting quietly, soaking up every word. Beverly was friendly but worried about her livelihood. There was Angie, a hard-nosed businesswoman with a great tan. I had never met these people until a group of Jackson's independent publishers all crowded into a borrowed conference room in Fondren Corner to talk about how the Gannett Corp., and its local affiliate, The Clarion-Ledger, was trying to hurt our businesses.

City Makes Letter to Ledger Public

Letters to the Editor

This (so-far-unpublished) letter to the editor of The Clarion-Ledger about an Eric Stringfellow column came around this week in the mayor's weekly newsletter: [verbatim from here]The letter below is from the City of Jackson's Attorney, Terry Wallace. He wrote this letter to the editor of the Clarion Ledger in response to a column written by Eric Stringfellow. We thought we would share this because it contains information that you will never read in the paper or see on TV. November 30, 2004

[City Buzz] Republican Lite

This past week, The Magnolia Report, the conservative online news site, posted an MP3 clip in which George Dale, commissioner of insurance and a leader of the Mississippi Democratic Party, said on SuperTalk radio that Mississippi's Democratic leadership had specifically sought a "white" chairman in answer to a question about presumptive new party chairman, Wayne Dowdy.

CONGRATULATIONS, Ayana!!!

If y'all heard squeals of delight in the distance over the last 24 hours, it's because the JFP's Ayana Taylor learned that she was accepted to the Academy for Alternative Journalism this summer at Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern in Chicago. This is a HUGE deal, as they only accept 10 applicants a year. We're so proud of Ayana; first she won the AAN diversity grant, and now this. Please congratulate her the next time you see her out and about; she is going to go very far in this business. We can all say we knew her when. Read about the Academy:

Clarion-Ledger Acknowledges Crime Drop

C-L editorial today: "Jackson's 30 percent drop in overall crime the first quarter of this year is an encouraging sign that with persistence by the police and public the decline could turn into a trend. All but aggravated assault (up 14 percent), among major crimes, showed a decrease from the same first three months last year, Jackson Police Department figures show. Could this be a trend? Police figures show 17,144 major crimes were reported in 2003, a 3 percent drop from 2002 and the lowest since before 1988. So, if the rest of 2004 continues at this rate, it will show substantial progress."

President Bush abruptly changed his tune today from days ago when he and Dick Cheney questioned the patriotism of people who are questioning the Iraqi War (which is not a large majority of Americans): After fiercely defending his Iraq policy across Asia, President Bush abruptly toned down his attack on war critics Sunday and said there was nothing unpatriotic about opposing his strategy.
