Mississippi Seeks Groups for $1M Prekindergarten Expansion

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi education officials are seeking applications from groups seeking $1 million to expand state-funded prekindergarten classes.

Lawmakers increased funds for the program from $3 million to $4 million a year beginning July 1.

The early learning collaboratives include a mix of school districts, Head Start agencies, private child care centers, and nonprofits offering classes to four-year-olds.

Mississippi's state-funded effort hasn't expanded until now beyond the initial groups serving 1,700 students statewide for lack of funding.

The Mississippi Department of Education is accepting applications until Sept. 26. Officials say they will choose new grant recipients based on ability to provide services, showing improved kindergarten preparation, needs of local children and other factors.

An information meeting will be held Sept. 6 in Jackson. The state will notify winners Nov. 10.
