Glitch Shortens Some Mississippi Driver's License Renewals

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Department of Public Safety is working to fix a glitch that caused some driver's licenses to be renewed for too few years.

The department is updating the system that issues driver's licenses to make them harder to counterfeit. Spokesman Warren Strain says Thursday that an unknown number of licenses were issued for three years rather than the standard four, or for seven years rather than eight.

The department says the problem arose when people renewed the license online or using a kiosk before their birthday. A computer program made the renewed license valid starting on the person's birthday the previous year rather the current year.

People with the shortened licenses will receive letters telling them how their licenses will be valid for the full term they paid.
