Rep. Bennie Thompson Cruises to Re-Election

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Democrat Bennie Thompson of Bolton has won another term in Mississippi's 2nd Congressional District.

Unofficial results show 66-year-old Thompson defeated two candidates Tuesday — independent Troy Ray and the Reform Party's Shelley Shoemake.

Thompson is the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee. He served as mayor of Bolton and a Hinds County supervisor before winning a special election to Congress in 1993.

The 2nd District includes most of Mississippi's capital city of Jackson. It stretches more than 200 miles along the Mississippi River, through the soybean fields of the Delta. It is one of the poorest parts of the United States.

Thompson raised $1.08 million over the last two years and spent $900,000, ending with $1.4 million in the bank.

Both of Thompson's challengers ran low-budget campaigns.

Never any question of his winning his race, no real challengers, excellent service to his constituents, and he tries very hard to work with everyone. His district runs into my neighborhood and I have been proud to vote for him in his elections over the years and work with him on several projects.
