Miss. Supreme Court Won't Undo Block on Gun Law

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Supreme Court says it won't undo a circuit judge's order that's blocking an open-carry gun law from taking effect.

Justices say they made their decision for procedural reasons, not on the merits of any arguments.

Hinds County Circuit Judge Winston Kidd handed down a ruling this past Friday that blocked the gun law from taking effect on July 1.

Attorney General Jim Hood filed papers with the Supreme Court on Monday, asking justices to undo Kidd's order.

Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith was among those who asked Kidd to block the law.

A panel of three Supreme Court justices on Tuesday denied Hood's request. That means Kidd can hold a July 8 hearing to decide whether to extend his order.

Why is it that Hinds County is the only to have a problem with the law?

billjackson, based on the number of law enforcement officials ACROSS THE STATE that have expressed concern about the law, it isn't just Hinds County that has the problem. They just happened to be the only people who did something about their concern.

I've read law enforcement in several counties (TV, newspaper) here in the Delta express their concerns about this law (which in my opinion is just a token law for Mississippi to show their support for the NRA). The law makers don't care about the extra manpower and hours required to enforce this law effectively

Desoto, Tate, Rankin, and Lauderdale county's Sheriffs have all said the TRO doesn't apply to their counties and as far as they are concerned the law went in to effect July 1. Wish Hinds county had leaders who respected the Miss Constitution like these other counties. We will remember they don't come next election.
