JPS Schools Win Gold for Health

— Thirty-nine Jackson elementary schools earned gold stars.

Technically, the schools won Gold Awards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for their work in making healthier food choices through the USDA's Healthier U.S. School Challenge.

The program also recognizes schools for promoting physical activity and adopting wellness policies.

Janey Thornton, USDA's deputy undersecretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services will visit Brown, Lake and Raines Elementary Schools Tuesday morning and afternoon.

Later, Thornton will recognize all 39 Gold Award-winning schools at a ceremony Tuesday afternoon at Cardozo Middle School, located at 3180 McDowell Rd., at 4 p.m.
