After three years in business, Wired Espresso Cafe closed its doors last weekend due to a tough economy for coffee sales.

"It was time to pull the plug," owner Gary Davis says about the hard decision to close the shop. Davis says that high gas prices and the absence of foot traffic took a toll on his State Street business.

The coffee shop also served as a place where Crossings Church met on Sundays. Proceeds from the coffee and sandwiches sold helped cover rent and salaries for church employees.

"We opened the shop to get involved in the community and be a part of downtown revival," he says.

David says it was no longer economically viable to keep the shop running.

"It was a great idea, and I think it was one of the better coffee shops in town, but financially it's not a good a time to run a coffee shop," he says.

Law Firm Ranks High

For the eighth year in a row, American Lawyer magazine has named Adams and Reese Law Firm in Jackson as one of the top law firms in the country.

The national law firm, based in New Orleans, with an office in Jackson, ranks No. 179, nine spots higher than the previous year's ranking of No. 188.

Jackson Foreclosures Increase

Foreclosure rates in Jackson have increased in March compared to the same month last year, the data tracking company CoreLogic reported yesterday.

The rate of foreclosures among outstanding mortgage loans is 2.33 percent for March 2011, an increase of 0.44 percentage points compared to March of 2010 when the rate was 1.89 percent. Foreclosures in Jackson, however, are still lower than the national foreclosure rate, which was 3.57 percent for March 2011.
