Derrick Smith, owner of Da Kut, is hosting Cutting for Confidence, a back-to-school event for young boys.

Derrick Smith has always believed that a haircut can yield a completely changed person. For him, a haircut represents a new outlook, a different way of seeing the world. That is why the 36-year-old barber is hosting Cutting for Confidence, a back-to-school event for young boys.

The event will take place from 2-6 p.m. Aug. 14, at the YMCA on Farish Street. Any male youth can receive a free haircut from one of 25 professionally trained barbers.

"Haircuts are extremely important to young men," Smith says, "Looking good promotes self-confidence. I want to provide these boys with a good start to the school year."

Smith's event, sponsored by Andis products, the YMCA, Klean Jokers Master Barbers and Da Gauge barber tools, is geared mainly towards young boys who may be struggling in their home or school settings. Smith hopes to help the children build self-esteem through a fresh look, a fresh start.

"We want to let them know there are people out there who care about them," Smith says. He also wishes to give the boys another life to look at, as a role model, or someone they can look up to.

Growing up in Brookhaven, Smith was inspired by his barbers as a young boy, and knew he wanted to make a living cutting hair. Smith received his barber's license from Moore Community College in 1994, and has been cutting hair ever since.

He, his wife, Akkim, and children, Junior, Errick, Koby and Chloe moved to Jackson five years ago, when Smith began his business Da Kut, at 5965 Highway 18 W.

Remembering the influence of the barbers of his childhood, Smith hopes to continue this event annually.
