Weekend Events

This weekend is packed with live entertainment and fun events, so plan your time wisely. After the storms clear this evening, head to the Mississippi Museum of Art at 7 p.m. for Operation Shoestring's annual Spring Fling fundraiser. The event raises money for Operation Shoestring's after school programs and features food and drink as well as live music by The Chill. Admission is $20. For some late-night fun, attend Mr. Kid & The Brothers Fox CD release party with Spacewolf and Mark Roemer at Hal & Mals. For more live entertainment options, check out the JFP Music Listings.

On Saturday, wake up early for a good cause and get your pink on. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5k starts at 8:30 a.m. and registration opens at 7 a.m. in downtown Jackson. Proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen, a breast-cancer education and research foundation. For more information, call 601-932-3999. If you want to get your hands dirty, bring your gloves, rakes and shovels to "Planting Healthy Seeds and Deeds" at the corner of Medgar Evers Boulevard and West Northside Drive and help plant an organic spring tornado. If you're a fan of vinyl and good music, don't miss "Record Store Day" at Bebop Record Shop. The record store will feature special vinyl and CD releases. Bands will perform from 1 to 5:30 p.m. The line-up includes Johnny Bertram, Marlowe and the Sea, Wes Edwards, Taylor Hildebrand and Valley Gordon, and Used Goods. After such a busy day, pack a picnic and head to Belhaven Park on Poplar Boulevard for an outdoor screening of "The Wizard of Oz" at 6:30 p.m. Or support art programs for Jackson Public Schools' students and attend "An Evening of Hope with Nicole Marquez" at the Arts Center of Mississippi. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by calling 601-969-6015. See the JFP's Best Bets and
