The Tyler (Texas) Morning Telegraph is reporting on Melton's indictments—while oddly not mentioning that his wife and homestead exemption still reside right there in their coverage area:

A former Tyler businessman defiantly says he will not resign as mayor of Jackson, Miss., despite six felony and two misdemeanor indictments against him.

Melton, a former business owner in Tyler, told members of the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce in 2003 that the war on drugs had to become tougher.

In that speech Melton criticized bankers and car dealers who knowingly accept money generated from drug deals into their banks and businesses.

"They are just as much a part of the problem as the thug out on the corner selling the drugs," Melton said. "I'm not trying to make anybody uneasy; I'm just simply trying to tell you the truth. If we're going to solve the problem, we need to roll up our sleeves and solve the problem, and let the chips fall where they may."

Melton said during that meeting he believed the community should undergo preventive steps to keep crime rates down.

"The way you keep a community honest is you repair the community when the first window is broken, not when the truck is in the ditch," he said.

However, the Ledger states in its Monday edition that the city's crime statistics have increased despite Melton's style.

This man will never change. I don't think this will be that reporters last story on Melton. The former Tyler businessman... Already distancing themselves from him.
