Throughout his three-year stint in Jackson, Moore never passed up an opportunity to articulate his greatness.

From his time with the Illinois State Police to his presidential appointment as a U.S. marshal to his tenure in Jackson, Moore seemed addicted to self-promotion.

The exclamation point came election night, during the chief's impromptu announcement of his June 30 retirement.

"I accomplished everything that I could accomplish as police chief," Moore told The Clarion-Ledger.

Accomplished everything except, among other things, convincing his officers and the public that his leadership is what the Police Department needed and that the department was headed toward stability.

When the new mayor ponders Moore's successor, he should consider the leadership and talent inside the department before following the example that brought us the current chief.
