The Best in Sports in the Next 7 Days

Thursday, Oct. 7

College football, Houston at Southern Miss, 6 p.m. (ESPN2 and 1180 AM/104.3 FM): The Eagles figure to feast on a CUSA cupcake.

High school football, Callaway at Provine (Hughes Field), 7 p.m.: This might be the biggest rivalry in the city. And the mighty Rams are still upset about their loss to the Chargers last year.

Friday, Oct. 8

High school football, Clinton at Murrah (Newell Field), 7 p.m.: Both of these teams have struggled this year, but a district game figures to bring out the best in them.

Saturday, Oct. 9

College football, Georgetown (Ky.) at Belhaven, 1:30 p.m.: The Tigers, 5-0, are the powerhouse of the Mid-South Conference. Can Belhaven pull an upset in the muck and mire of stately Newell Field? If you prefer to sleep in, Millsaps plays host to Centre at 6 p.m. Since when Millsaps start playing all these night games?

Sunday, Oct. 10

Pro football, Tampa Bay at New Orleans (Ch. 35 and 620 AM): Just remember the Saints will break your heart if you pull for them.

Monday, Oct. 11

Pro football, Tennessee at Green Bay (Ch. 16 and 930 AM): Two of Mississippi's greatest football heroes, Steve McNair and Brett Favre will do battle on the frozen tundra. Provided that they both heal in time for the game.

Tuesday, Oct. 12

Movie, "Too Many Girls" (Turner Classic Movies): Oh Lucy! Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz co-star in this 1940 epic about college football players hired to chaperone an heiress at a wild western college. And yes, Desi does play the congas.

Wednesday, Oct. 13

Pro baseball, National League Championship Series, 7 p.m.: Here's hoping that the Cardinals and Braves meet to decide who will represent the senior circuit in the World Series. (Note: It's going to be the Cardinals.) Fox will probably show the game, but check your local listings.
