GOP Rhetoric About Hood ‘Corruption' Reprehensible
Todd and I made the mistake of watching the evening news last night. The attack ads were just plain horrifying. The one that disgusted me the most was Al and Haley's ad about Hood being "corrupt." This is such a twisting of the truth, as we've reported repeatedly, that those two men ought to be run out of this state for telling such vicious lies and slandering another human being. Haley and the GOP machine will. stop. at. nothing. The Clarion-Ledger, amazingly, is seeing through the ruse (although they did everything they could to help this machine get its power in the past). In their endorsement of Hood today, they write:

U.S. House Probing Diaz, Minor Prosecutions
The idea that the prosecutions of Justice Oliver Diaz and attorney Paul Minor may have been politically motivated by a George Bush administration is gathering steam in the nation's capitol, in the aftermath of other similar allegations about Bush's Justice Department. The Clarion-Ledger's Washington Bureau is reporting:

‘Men of Character' Live Auction to Debut at JFP Chick Ball on July 9
Here are the "Men of Character":
In addition to the best and most chic silent auction around, the 7th Annual JFP Chick Ball will feature a live auction of Jackson "Men of Character" at the fundraising event July 9 at Hal & Mal's in downtown Jackson. Bring your checkbooks and credit cards and bid on the following fabulous men, who will in turn, uh, perform services they are best known for on behalf of the winning bidders (get your mind out of the gutter; their "services" are listed after their names!). Professional auctioneeress Christine Whitton of Clinton will auction the "Men of Character" starting at 7:55 p.m. in the Red Room, right before the other awards. All auction proceeds will benefit the Center for Violence Prevention and help stop domestic abuse in central Mississippi. This year's money is dedicated to stopping domestic abuse in rural counties around Jackson.

So, Rudy "Take the Guns!" Giuliani is headed to Mississippi to campaign in a region where very few of his (historic) views actually resonate. We're guessing his kids won't be along for the trip to Dixie; at least one of them is too busy campaigning for Obama and trying to get over the fact that her daddy announced his divorce to mama on TV at a press conference. Of course, that was back before the cad became a conservative darling in a party that is just about fresh out of darlings.
Road to @#$%^&* Wellness
Well, it seems I'm on the road to wellness whether I like it or not. I've found a wonderful, wonderful integrative doctor, Dr. Joseph White (of the Optimum Health Institute up near Tougaloo), who has helped me figure out why I've been tired so much (you know, the reasons beyond working 80 hours a week for four years now!). I'll spare you details, but let's say my system is out of balance, and it's making me miserable as a result. And I'm not facing anything life-threatening (thank God), but could be if I don't get my healthy lifestyle back in place.

Orley Hood Among Laid-off Clarion-Ledger Staffers
Update: Associated Press is reporting that Orley Hood is among 11 employees laid off today at The Clarion-Ledger, joining 20 unfilled jobs that were eliminated. The Clarion-Ledger has dropped from 470 employees this summer to 367 now, a 25 percent reduction in positions.

Village Voice Media Owner Offends with Racial Slur
OK, so this was not the best moment for the alternative-news industry. The owner of the alternative newspaper industry's most corporate chain, Mike Lacey, accepted an award from the Phoenix Society of Professional Journalists on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's death. At the podium, he referred to his deceased (white) friend, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tom Fitzpatrick, as "my n*gger." In the audience were black journalists, as well as an 82-year-old mother of a deceased black sports journalist there to accept a special award on his behalf.
Clarion-Ledger Fails to Endorse Hinds D.A. Candidate
... or a single woman, for that matter. The Ledger edit-boyz surprised us today by not enthusiastically endorsing one of the challengers of Hinds County District Attorney Faye Peterson in the race that is, arguably, the hottest contested and most closely watched in the city where they're located. They did, however, endorse candidates for Madison County district attorney.
