Mississippi Dems Uniting?
The Petal News reports: "Mississippi Democrats held their annual pep rally, the Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner in Jackson this past weekend. And Party Chairman Rickey Cole reported the largest turnout in recent years. It appears at this point that the party has survived the disruptive events of the past two years and is making a recovery."
"Letters, Prayers, and Journal Entries," Anne Davis
I have a confession to make: I am inherently suspicious of confessional albums with a message. So when I received a copy of Anne Davis' "Letters, Prayers, and Journal Entries"—which, by the way, is a very confessional piece of work—I had my misgivings about doing a review. As I glanced through the lyrics, credits and art work on the record, it became clear to me that Davis, a Jackson native and longtime Nashville resident, is serious about showing the world who she is, where she's been and how serious she is about her faith. I braced myself for a listen, thinking that this must be yet another earnest female singer-songwriter with a beautiful voice and not much new to say.
Mayor Lifts Jackson ‘Curfew'
The city of Jackson today lifted an emergency "curfew" that they told the JFP a week ago was not enforceable for either individuals or businesses. Here's the press release:
"African Americans for Dean" Site Launches
It's intriguing to watch the efforts of the Dean campaign to reach out to the black community. Earlier today, the campaign announced that he has appointed a new deputy campaign director with impressive credentials of organizing in the black community. Now, Courtney Smith of Florida has announced a new African Americans for Dean Web site. I think the real test of this new grass-roots campaign is whether Dean can turn his success on the Internet with young, white progressives into a broad-based campaign that reaches into every American community. Let's keep watching.
Important Correction About Run-Offs
In the issue of the JFP out today, we said you could vote in the run-offs on Tuesday ONLY IF you voted in the Aug. 5 primary. The secretary of state's office called immediately to call our attention to the mistake: *You can vote in the run-off* even if you didn't vote in the primary, but you do have to vote for the same party (I suppose, unless you didn't vote at all; then you can take your pick).

Sid Salter on Haley Barbour
In the Sept. 13 issue of National Journal: "I think (Barbour's) been successful in changing his image from someone who just showed up on Crossfire to a guy who rolled up his sleeves, went out into rural Mississippi, shook hands, and sweated through his shirt," said Sid Salter, a political columnist with The Clarion-Ledger, in Jackson, Miss.
