Dr. Hannah Gay's patient, a Mississippi toddler born to an HIV-infected mother in 2010, tested positive for the infection at birth and for several months while under Gay's care. Then, she and her mother stopped showing up for treatment. When the baby returned to the University of Mississippi Medical Center about 18 months later, clinicians could not find the virus in her blood.
