Jucos On Hold

The start of Mississippi's junior college football season has been delayed again, this time until Sept. 22, due to damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.

O, What A Start

Ole Miss began the Ed Orgeron era with a 10-6 victory over Memphis on Monday. The Rebs didn't look like a national championship team, but at least they beat Memphis for a change. Micheal Spurlock earned a shot of redemption and DeAngelo Williams' Heisman Trophy hopes went down the drain.

Braves Take A Seat

The Mississippi Braves have cancelled the last four games of the season due to damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. The Braves were scheduled to begin a four-game series with the Carolina Mudcats on Friday. The team had already canceled its three-game home series with Chattanooga. Meanwhile, Alcorn State postponed its football game with Grambling State, scheduled for Saturday in Lorman.

Monta Ellis Faces Draft

Lanier High School's uber-talented guard Monta Ellis decided to bypass playing college basketball at Mississippi State and jump into the NBA draft. On Tuesday night, the wisdom of that decision will be revealed when the picking begins (6:30 p.m., ESPN). Ellis went to the NBA because he's been told he will be a first-round pick. Sports Illustrated says he wlll go to the Sacramento Kings with the No. 23 pick. Insidehoops.com says the Utah Jazz with No. 27. But About Pro Basketball says he's going to the L.A. Lakers with the No. 37 pick in the second round. That would be bad, because first-round picks' contracts are guaranteed; second-round pick's deals aren't. Good luck, Monta.

That's just weird." ... The currently unidentified young man had already broken into the Larsen's home on several occasions prompting the family to set up surveillance cameras to catch him in the act. They did, but still haven't been able to catch or even identify the suspect.

Egg Ball In SEC

Mississippi State and Ole Miss first met on the baseball field on Oct. 12, 1893. But their 413th meeting will easily be the most important in their long rivalry. The Bulldogs and the Rebels will play in the Southeastern Conference tournament championship game on Sunday in Hoover, Ala. (3 p.m., FSN South, 620 AM, 97.3 FM). Mississippi State, which squeaked into the tournament field as the No. 7 seed, has been the surprise of the tourney, winning all three of its games. Ole Miss, the No. 4 seed, had to beat top-seeded Florida twice on Saturday to reach Sunday's winner-take-all final. The Rebels have won all four of their games with the Bulldogs this season. But Sunday ... ???
