Class Field Trip

Let's be honest: One of the best things about going back to school, if you're fortunate, is the new wardrobe that starts off the year. The frilly dresses and trendy tops, clean kicks and fresh haircuts ... who wouldn't love it? Back to school can even be a way to reinvent yourself.

This week's steals for the budget-savvy fashionista:

Hitched: A Groom's Story

Most grooms consider everything that might go wrong the night before the wedding. For me, those considerations came a year and a half before Rachael Gray-Lewis and I said, "I do."

Athena Protects Her Children

Sunday, I sat, twirling the hair at my right temple around my index finger, until I saw something that startled me. Walking into the room was a young woman wearing the exact blush-colored, silk duponi ruffle-neck dress with subtle box pleating at the waist I was wearing. My heart stopped. This had never happened to me before. My head was spinning. Do I run home and change? Do I hope my styling choices--topping the dress with a signature black cardigan, tossing the blush-colored sash and opting to wear a black rhinestone-buckled belt and Betsey Johnson Athena pumps--are enough to differentiate the two of us? This had never happened to me before. I've heard of this horror story happening to others, and I felt bad for them. But I never made a plan for what I'd do if it were to happen to me. Athena helped me save face, but be still my heart if that ever happens to me again.

DIY – Decorated Shirt

Every now and then when you're being budget conscious, you'll feel the urge to splurge. Those "I've gotta have it!" moments seem to come from nowhere. But fiscal responsibility doesn't an end to the latest fashion trends for you. All that's required is a little ingenuity, patience, and a needle and thread.

Shoegasmic Sale

Tell them FLY! blog sent you!

Right now, at this very moment, there's a summer shoe sale going on at the Shoe Bar at Pieces. The entire stock ... read it again: The entire stock of summer shoes and wedges is 50 percent off until there's not a single pair left. I don't know what size shoe you wear, but the Sam Edelman Quintessa may still be there in your size.

Shop, Pack, Go

Weekend getaways require one bag. Yes, just one. Throw in your bag a swimsuit and a cover-up; a pair of shorts and a top; a jersey-knit maxi dress that can be dressed up or down, when need be; a pair of shoes (or two, or three ... maybe it's a big bag!); and something to entertain yourself, and you're ready for just about anything your adventurous spirit might get you into. Have fun! Check out the JFP Issu for design ideas. And don't forget the sunblock.

Travel: What Not to Do

Last August, my then-boyfriend Mason and I took an excursion to Memphis to celebrate summer's end. We were anticipating a carefree day trip, but expectation quickly turned to distress as our whole day was plagued with disappointing fiascos.

Road Trip Destinations

If you're planning a day trip from Jackson, consider yourself lucky: The state capital sits at the crossroad of two major interstate highways, making it easy to get to nearby cities, north, south, east or west. Here are a few points of interest to help you make a decision.

Alt.Mississippi

Mississippi is unique. And no matter what naysayers believe, the Magnolia state has something for just about everyone. Take some time this summer to travel around the state and explore some of the one-of-a kind and unusual sites Mississippi has to offer. Then tell your friends, so they can visit, too.

Hanging out with Dad

When I was a little girl, I remember taking my bright neon bubble paint and going up to my father's bedroom before one Father's Day, where I took out his favorite red polo shirt. I knew he liked fishing and watching television, so I drew a huge TV on the front of his shirt with a man fishing.

Father's Day

The proud papa is a guy who has snapshots of his kids in his wallet where his money used to be. Humorous to some, true for others. This year, give your father a gift thoughtfully chosen for him, based on his personality or hobbies. Head on over to This week's JFP Issuu and check out the deals!
