Mississippi's federal employees awoke this morning under the cloud of furloughs or being asked to work without pay. U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson issued a press release last night, within moments of the federal government shutdown becoming clear to all.
His release, verbatim, is below:
“Once again, House Republicans have chosen partisan politics over our troops, our seniors, our economy and our communities. They have taken their ball and gone home at the expense of millions of Americans. Over 19,000 federal employees in Mississippi now risk unemployment, military personnel may go unpaid, and obtaining a passport or gun permit will be virtually impossible. Tomorrow, hundreds of thousands of federal employees face uncertainty due to the GOP’s objection to providing 40 million Americans with accessible affordable healthcare.”
