Malcolm Gladwell writes in The New Yorker: "Despite the N.F.L.'s claims that it is concerned about the health of the players, it is more concerned about the health of the N.F.L. Football's governors make a distinction between natural violence and artificially aided violence, and it's their contention that the former has a good deal more market appeal than the latter, in the same way that consumers are believed to be willing to pay more for pure orange juice than they are for the adulterated version."
America's Pastime: Moneyball
The Oakland A's have turned conventional baseball wisdom into a lie. Many people who work in, report on or follow major league baseball say that the game has changed from an athletic contest into a financial one. The small-market and/or cash-poor teams have no chance to compete against free-spending clubs like the New York Yankees and Mets, Boston Red Sox or Atlanta Braves.

Sally Slavinski
Sally Slavinski, 36, slides into a chair in Hal & Mal's 30 minutes before we open. She apologizes for being late, explaining that she just ran 11 miles in training for the Mardi Gras half-marathon on Feb. 16. Dressed in a gray Berkeley zip-up sweatshirt over gray sweatpants with a New Zealand All Blacks rugby cap over her straw-blond hair, she opens a container of strawberry Dannon yogurt and sips from an Aquafina bottled water. It would take 20 pages to list all that she's done in her short life, starting with a childhood in Long Island, N.Y., a biology degree from Michigan State, working summers in Yellowstone, veterinary school, working with the Heifer Project in Uganda, practicing small-animal medicine in Ohio, working with the World Health Organization for three months in India, working in Martha's Vineyard and acquiring a degree in public health from Berkeley. But what does she do now?

New Orleans Saints to Play in Jackson in August
[verbatim] For the second time in as many years, the New Orleans Saints are bringing NFL football to Mississippi, playing the Indianapolis Colts at Jackson's Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. With the state being a substantial part of the club's fan base, the Saints return to Jackson after holding the club's annual Black & Gold Scrimmage at the stadium in 2005. Part of what made this game possible was the involvement of BankPlus as an official sponsor of the event.
Watermelon Classic
The 20th running of one of Mississippi's oldest road races takes place at 7:30 a.m. on Friday July 4, 2003 in front of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum at 1152 Lakeland Drive in Jackson, MS. Registration forms are currently available at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, Fleet Feet stores and all Baptist Fitness Centers for The Baptist Health Systems Watermelon Classic 5K Run & Walk. Entry fees for the race are $15 for pre-registration, $20 on race day. Entry fees for the fun run are $10 in advance, $12 on race day. Advance team and family entries are welcome.
Highty, Tighty, Gosh a Mighty ... Who Cares?
Back home after having Frank's biscuits for lunch, Todd plops down in front of the TV. "Look, Ole Miss is about to beat Florida. And they're ranked No. 6," he says, excitedly. Mississippi State alum that I am, I start watching the TV screen in a rather bored fashion. Suddenly, I realize that the man I love and who has routinely cheered for State with me is rooting for Ole Miss. He even supported my team against his alma mater, Texas A&M in the bowl game a couple years back (he knew I'd be hard to live with if State lost). Now, though, he's betraying me? What the ....?!? "Well, they're the Mississippi team. We've got to root for Mississippi teams. And they'll tear down the goal posts." I'm starting to realize that my Texas man is truly becoming a Mississippian -- except, well, you can't root for both State and Ole Miss. Not in the same lifetime. He oughta know that; he's from a football state. When's the last time Mr. A&M cheered on Texas, eh? I keep shooting him dirty looks through the end of the game, even as Ole Miss students rush the field. Later, I will hear that Texas Tech beat A&M today. Well, then.

The winner plays Mississippi State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. … Also, high school basketball, MHSAA Boys and Girls State Tournament (MPB): In the 2A girls final, Coldwater plays Bay Springs at 6:30 p.m. And in the 2A boys title tilt, it's Heidelberg vs. Hollandale Simmons at 8 p.m.

Sly Croom Featured in New York Times
In a big story Sunday,, The New York Times profiled Bulldogs coach Sly Croom: "Home is 83 miles away in Tuscaloosa, Ala., but it might as well be a million. When Sylvester Croom is not at Mississippi State, he is traveling along Mississippi's two-lane roads, talking to alumni and high school coaches and just about any gathering with an extra chair. He is all but going door to door, selling the idea of him as the Bulldogs' football coach.

NCAA Places Mississippi State on Probation
Here's MSU's take on it.
Today the NCAA placed Mississippi State University on a four-year probation for four years because of football recruiting violations that occurred between 1998 and 2004. The NCAA stripped the university of eight scholarships over the next two seasons and banned Mississippi State from any 2004 postseason play. Also, the NCAA cut the school's expense-paid recruiting visits in each of the 2004-05 and 2005-06 academic years to 45, which is 11 fewer than the NCAA maximum. Former Coach Jackie Sherrill escaped a bit unscathed: Allegations of unethical conduct against him were dismissed.

NBA Whitewash?
Dan McGraw writes in the Village Voice: "[T]he NBA is changing, on the court and off, getting whiter and more foreign, and many African-American fans and players think there is more going on here than international meritocracy. The perception—and perception is always important in matters of race—is that the NBA is acing out the black man because of corporate (read: white) fans and international marketing money. High-scoring white guys equals big bucks."
