James Meredith pointed out that the debate over slavery gave way to the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which allowed slavery in the then-newly proposed state of Missouri but not in new western territories.

On August 18, James Meredith gave a press conference to announce the creation the Bible Society. He also spoke about many subjects, decked out in a white suit.
