On June 21,1964, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, sent to Philadelphia to investigate a fire at a church, were arrested by the Neshoba County Sheriff’s Department for speeding. The three men spent several hours in the jail and were released. They drove back to Meridian in a blue station wagon and were never seen alive again. Photo courtesy Mississippi Museum of Art
