Matthew Taylor

As the interim general counsel at Jackson State University, Matthew Taylor represents the college in all legal matters, meaning he needs to be prepared to handle any potential legal snafu that could arise. This is right in Taylor's legal sweet spot, as he is well versed in such areas as automobile liability, premises and products liability, medical malpractice, security liability, toxic tort and insurance coverage.

Unlike Deshun T. Martin—the previous general counsel who left the university in October 2013—Taylor is not a Jackson State graduate, having received his bachelor's degree in English at Mississippi College.

Taylor said his journey to law seemed obvious. "I thought it would be the only thing to do with an English major," Taylor said.

A practicing attorney since 1999, Taylor had his own private practice before joining JSU in July as an associate general counsel. He prefers his new surroundings, largely due to his co-workers.

"The people at Jackson State are amazing," Taylor said. "I love them, and the president is one of the finest leaders I've ever known."

Taylor and his wife, Sherry, have twin boys, a stepdaughter and a stepson. He is a member of St. Andrews Cathedral downtown.
