JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Jackson police have released the name of the man they say was shot when he tried to run over an officer with a car.

The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Kilinski Payton. He was hospitalized with what police said Thursday were non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Payton faces two counts of aggravated assault, one count of felony fleeing and one count of auto theft.

The shooting happened Wednesday morning on the Interstate 55 Frontage Road. Police were called to a business where a man allegedly tried to sell a stolen car.

By the time an officer arrived, the man allegedly was behind the wheel of another car. Jackson police say the man tried to run over the officer, who fired three times, striking the suspect twice.
