On the Issues: Lee vs. Lumumba

Trip Burns

Crime:

Lee: Would fire JPD Chief Rebecca Coleman and work on changing the culture of the fire and police departments.

Lumumba: Would involve reorienting the values of marginalized people who might be susceptible to committing crimes; wants to enter quasi-agreements with people who are arrested to refrain from criminal activity in exchange for certain considerations.

Education/Youth:

Lee: Calls for creating free after-school care that includes art, music and sports programs.

Lumumba: Would expand the city’s two-month summer jobs programs to enhance city beautification efforts and instill discipline with respect to attitudes toward work.

Water/Infrastructure:

Lee: Wants to involve regional partners; doesn’t want to raise utility rates or float bonds to pay for projects.

Lumumba: Wants to increase water revenues, then use the funds to pay for infrastructure upgrades.

Jobs/Economy:

Lee: Calls for leveraging development within the medical corridor and taking advantage of federal job training and other programs.

Lumumba: Views giving raises to city workers as stimulus program, which would inject more sales-tax revenue into the city’s coffers.

Development:

Lee: Wants “inclusive” development that makes sense for entire community; lacks allegiance to any particular

development.

Lumumba: Touts the way he handles business issues on the zoning committee by adjusting zoning and permit requirements for certain projects; supports waterfront development.

1-Percent Sales Tax; Commission:

Lee: Does not like the oversight commission, but would move forward with putting the issue to a vote later

this year.

Lumumba: Does not support the oversight commission because it deprives Jackson citizens of the right for their duly elected representatives to make fiscal decisions on the city’s behalf.

We suspect either could win, depending on who turns out. And we're not taking a position in this race, so we can't help you decide. But we will keep putting out as much factual information on both candidates as we can. You also posted something else in the backend that we need to confirm before opening. Feel free to send a link to it to: [email protected].

Thanks!

this morning i saw Our Mayor, Harvey Johnson, on channel 16. he was very gracious and i ams till despondant over the fact that he didn't even make it to the runoff. i am very sad for our city.

BUT. i do not see why white people don't want to vote for Chokwe.

they keep saying he wants to make a new country and that he doesn't like white people, but i know FOR A FACT that Chokwe went to wilson carol's house in fondren for a fundraiser, and he's as white and republican as you can get.

white people should vote for Chokwe.

Lee is not giving good answers, because he does not have a plan, to move Jackson forward.

The perceptions of the two kill me.

You have a particular group of people that dislike Jonathan because he doesn't sound "black" and has a hidden agenda from the "white folks"

While Chokwe is a secret member of the Black Panthers and will make Jackson a Socialist/Communist conclave.

Both guys are decent people - they just have different ideas on what direction the city needs to go.

I think both can do a good job - it's really up to you as a voter to do your due diligence. It's just that simple. This isn't good vs. evil, or dark vs. light - just two political opponents that have different ideas and views.

I'll give you a positive on both!

Jonathan has been hitting the slab over the last three (3) years in regards to Jackson, in regards to meeting with local groups and home owner associations - the man wants to make some things happen, he has fire in his belly for all things Jackson.

Chokwe has fire for activisim, he doesn't stand idle for foolishness - he backed up his talk by getting elected to the Jackson City council. He didn't initiate any kinds of radical legislation - that would make you question his ability serving in a larger capacity, whether as Mayor or a State Rep. His name is different - that's it! If Louisiana can elect Bobby Jindal to Governor and South Carolina can elect Nikki Haley - whats the issue with Chokwe? A name? C'mon.

People need to stop judging the book cover or face value (religious affiliation, party affiliation, race, skin tone) and start really judging the candidate themselves.

i don't think it is a problem that Chokwe wants to start a new black Nation, or that it doesn't bother him that a few cops have to be killed in order to get one.

I AM NOT saying that it is ok to kill cops, but i am saying that i'm fine with Chokwe not being bothered by it.

it will probably be a problem for the new police chief LOL. be interesting to see who Chokwe picks as his new cheif!!!!!!

"i don't think it is a problem that Chokwe wants to start a new black Nation, or that it doesn't bother him that a few cops have to be killed in order to get one."

ladycap68, it's entirely okay that Mr. Lumumba wants to start a new black nation, but why bother? There are any number of countries in Africa that could use an influx of effective leadership. He wants to build a new Africa, why not rebuild the existant one. People want to be a part of a new black nation, go with him.

And, if it doesn't bother Mr. Lumumba that a few cops gets killed in the process of secession, then he doesn't deserve the opportunity to be put into this office or any office serving the public.

"or that it doesn't bother him that a few cops have to be killed in order to get one."

I think this serves as a good answer for your earlier question about why white people, and honestly, many black people, don't vote for chokwe.

Also, going to one fundraiser at a white persons house does not necessarily mean you aren't racist against white people.

Jackson residents just un-elected a mayor, Harvey Johnson, whose complaints from citizens were the potholes in street and the LIE that his home is in Madison. So, why are we talking about past Civil Rights History of Lumumba and the Republicans supporting and financing Jonathan Lee.

Shouldn't we be discussing: POT HOLES & CHECKING RESIDENT TATUS?

Johnson was a Mayor who stood strong against the Legislature that wants to CONTROL Jackson's purse strings. One of the candidates, Jonathan Lee, accused him of not reaching across the isle to deal with White Republicans. I just wish that voters could have ivestigated Johnson the same way that Lumumba and Lee are being investigated. Had that been done, I think that we would have seen a different outcome.

Left standing in the Mayoral Democratic Race are Lumumba and Lee. Based on my on investigation of both candidates, I will now support Lumumba.

Mayor Johnson will be ok. It is my understanding that Jackson's loss will be another's gain. Many Cities and Small Towns are making fatastic offers to this talented and smart working man: One who was able to take over the ruins of Frank Melton and put the City back on the course of moving forward. It was not by accident that the JFP endorsed Johnson. Ladd and her team drive a tough bargain and it is understandable that the JFP has chosen to sit this one out.

I remember the JFP's many attemps to save this community from the hands of Melton. I guess this city should have the motto of Missourians: "I'm from Missouri - You have to show me."

MELTON SHOWED THIS CITY A GHOST!

It is my sincere hope that we are not of the brink of facing another horrible lesson in a repeat of our city's history.

See you at the POLLS and hopefully at the VICTORY CELEBRATION for Chokwe Lumumba.
