MDOC: Inmate Death at Rankin Prison

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — An inmate has been found dead in his cell at a state prison in Rankin County.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections says Bryan Owens, who was alone in a cell at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility, apparently hanged himself with a sheet. Officers found him Tuesday while serving dinner. He was pronounced dead at 5:09 p.m.

Officials say the 27-year-old had been brought to the prison hours earlier after being returned Monday from Arkansas. Owens fled the Yazoo County Community Work Center in Yazoo City Sunday. He and a woman were found in a vehicle in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Pine Bluff about 12:38 a.m.

Owens was serving a 12-year sentence for burglary, vehicle theft and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon from Harrison County.

I know many others will think this is no tragedy, I for one think it is. I do not know this man, but I do know that from my experiences NO ONE in the corrections facility that I have met would i trust. I DO KNOW some are so mistreated that at the first oppurtunity yes they run, Mistreated by other inmates and by the "officers" . SURELY he had to know he would eventually be apprehended yet he RAN anyway. SO many of our guys could be saved if the programs were for real. TAKE it from me even if you do not know me, for example WCCF has been a mess ever since Unit 32 was moved there. WCCF already had issues all though from my understanding the guys used to BEG TO GO THERE. NO MORE. even if they were sent there becuase of the great point system (which i still can not understand and CAN NOT get a copy of) IT is very hard for them to get points back in order to be transferred elsewhere. SORRY I could go on and on. THERE ARE MANY FAMILIES that care and will always care, not that we condone the reason they are there, but some LOVE never dies. NEVER. DREAMS MUST BE DIEING for our youth, so many are going in that direction. I GRIEVE for them all.

The family of this inmate should have an independent autopsy performed. Something is not right about the whole thing.

This was my son and I want to say that I am soooo glad that Chris Epps is being held accountable for his actions. The prison system is a joke, everything you have heard on the news and in the papers about inmate deaths has all been at the fault of the prison guards. This is what happened to my son, he did not kill himself he was murdered. The guard let other inmates come in on him and kill him. I will never fully recover from this and I hope the guards and inmates get their day of hell.
