Nissan Gives $500K to Canton Schools

CANTON, Miss. (AP) — Canton school officials say a gift from Nissan North America will be used to help at-risk students.

Superintendent Dwight Luckett tells The Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/15MaCax ) that the district will hire specialists to work one-on-one or in small groups with students to help them catch up to grade level in reading, language arts and math.

The $500,000 grant, announced Thursday, will be awarded in annual installments for the next five years.

Luckett says the district will consider test data to identify the elementary students who need extra classroom assistance. He says the district has part-time tutors now to work with students who lag in the classroom.

Nissan also donated two vehicles manufactured at the Canton plant — a 2013 Altima sedan and 2012 Xterra SUV — to the Canton Career Center.

And Canton will respond by trying to annex Nissan again and taxing them.

Nissan is not GIVING anything to Canton. The City is DUE those monies. The amount of tax revenues that the City of Canton would receive if Nissan paid taxes is substantially more than the token funds they are NOW providing to the City. The City of Canton should continue to ensure that it's not taken advantage of by Nissan and the State of Mississippi.
