As a white Mississippian, I feel ashamed of the Voter ID bill that just passed. Sen. John Henderson is right: no matter how it's dressed up, it's still Jim Crow. I hope the federal government declares it unconstitutional! There's no place for such limitations on voting in a real democracy.

I agree. It's also downright cheating because the Repubs who passed it know exactly who it's going to disenfranchise- that's why they did it. They can't win honestly they must cheat and scheme to do it.

RobbieR, I would guess the motivations are similar, at least in the sense that GOP party faithful are trying to create barriers for certain voters. Meanwhile, the debate over voter ID hasn't exactly been without incident: 'Seig Heil' shout stuns N.H. legislature - — A state lawmaker who yelled "Sieg Heil" on the floor of the New Hampshire House in objection to what he considered strongarm handling of a voter ID bill has touched off a firestorm over free speech and legislative decorum. It's also interesting to note some differences in the N.H. law that include requiring a photo and affidavit be taken of someone who doesn't have an ID -- a novel workaround that at least doesn't mandate government ID, although it might still be intimidating and/or inefficient -- and an affidavit taken for people who reject the photo on religious grounds.

Todd, If it's intimidating to have your photo taken, I suggest your staff photog Virginia to stop snapping pics in bars then. Such an intimidating practice, shan't be tolerated.
