Jane Everly says real learning means knowing how to innovate and apply skills across traditional subject lines. Her commitment to bridging the gap between various disciplines is part of the reason why Jackson Public Schools has named Everly, principal of Davis Magnet Elementary School, the district's administrator of the year.

"Probably the most important factor in my decision to become an educator was that I loved being a student," Everly said in a statement. "I have always enjoyed learning and believe strongly in the premise that educators must be life-long learners."

JPS recognized Everly as administrator of the year during a school board meeting last month.

During her time at Davis, Everly has helped the school form a partnership with Parents for Public Schools' Ask for More Arts program. Through the program, students learn about the arts and how they relate to other disciplines. One class at Davis recently presented a reading of poems and artwork its students created after learning about the Civil Rights Movement in Jackson.

Everly received her bachelor's degree from Belhaven College, and earned master's and specialist's degrees from Mississippi College. She also received a doctorate degree from Jackson State University.

Before becoming the principal at Davis, Everly was a gifted education teacher and coordinator for JPS. She also worked as an assistant principal at Woodville Heights Elementary from 2004 to 2007.

During Everly's time at Davis, the school earned a star rating from the state Department of Education--the highest designation in the state. The school has also started a program where medical professionals from the University of Mississippi Medical Center visit Davis to teach students about science in hopes that more students will become interested in medical school.

As a former Davis parent, Dr. Everly is well-deserving of this award.

She taught my gifted class at Siwell back in the 90s. Good to see her still getting after it.
