Today is the day many Jacksonians have been waiting for: the General Elections. Your vote matters; this is not the day to assume your candidates will win without your help. Your ballot will look different depending on your city ward; however, all eligible registered Jackson voters will have an opportunity to cast a vote for the next mayor. Six individuals are running for mayor in Jackson: Democrat and former Mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr.; Independents Robert Amos, David Archie, Charlotte Reeves and Rick Whitlow; and Republican George Lambus.

Today's elections will also decide two City Council Seats: In Ward 6, left vacant by Councilman Marshand Crisler's unsuccessful bid for mayor, Democrat Tony Yarber faces Independent Samuel Kazery; Ward 7 six-term incumbent Margaret Barrett-Simon, a Democrat, faces Republican challenger Ponto R. Downing and Independent Luther G. Latham. Council seats in other wards are unopposed.

In other races, liquor in Flowood might be flowing in restaurants soon, if the 76-24% margin can hold up. 25% of the precincts there have reported so far. In Vicksburg, mayor Laurence Leyens got his lunch eaten, losing 63-37% to Paul Winfield.

It will be interesting to see how fast they announce that Olive Garden, among others, will be coming to Dogwood if "liquor by the drink" is approved in Flowood.
