[Verbatim from MEMA] PEARL – As a blast of Arctic air threatens northwest Mississippi with frigid temperatures and freezing rain, MEMA Executive Director Mike Womack is reminding residents to be prepared for severe winter weather conditions tonight and tomorrow. The National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning which is in effect from noon today until 6 a.m. Tuesday for northwest Mississippi counties including DeSoto, Benton, Tate, Tunica and Marshall. The ice storm warning could be extended into the day Tuesday. Up to ½ inch ice accumulation is possible with this storm system. Areas north of Highway 82 may also receive freezing precipitation tonight through tomorrow, according to the weather service.

"Whenever below freezing temperatures are mixed with freezing rain, we run the risk of ice that can bring down power lines and tree limbs," Womack said. "It is important for people to be aware of the risky driving conditions during severe winter weather."

MEMA recommends the following safety tips during winter storms:

Stay clear of downed power lines. Even if the electricity appears to have been turned off, leave the lines alone. Do not try to move them yourself.

Only operate generators outdoors. Do not operate a generator inside your home or garage.

Turn off all home appliances to prevent a surge once the power is turned on again.

Be cautious when using alternative heat sources. Do not use a stove for heat because it can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Letting water drip from a faucet extremely cold weather can relieve water pressure and help prevent pipes of your home from bursting. If you suspect your pipes are frozen and may have burst, turn off your water at the main shut-off valve and call a plumber.

I was concerned there for a minute until I saw it was for northwestern Mississippi. The forecast I saw would be too warm for us to have an ice storm, though it doesn't mean it can't happen here. New England is trying to thaw out of a crippling ice storm right now.
