Wake Up Jackson is looking for suggestions and feedback!

Wake Up Jackson Civic Association needs you. We're waiting on the outcome of a couple of things, so in the meantime, please let me know what you would like for us to do and focus on for the remainder of 2007.

To get you going, here are some topics that are already on the table:

- Should there be a moratorium on the use of Tasers by JPD until the Department of Justice finishes conducting its two-year study on the safety of the equipment?

- What rights do automobile owners have in the City of Jackson? I understand towing a car if it is illegally parked at that moment, but what around towing a car from a person's residence for an unpaid ticket? Is that permitted by law, and is the City allowed to sell the vehicle?

- What would you like to see on the Web site?

- What topics would you like to see on the Wake Up Jackson blog?

- I want to do a property rights forum. Who would you like to see on the panel of experts?

- We have a store for promotional items, but do you have any other suggestions for raising funds in order to keep the Web site running, publish pamphlets, etc.?

Besides what I have listed, what else would you like to see? Is there anything you think we are doing or not doing right? I am especially looking forward to hearing from those who were fired up after the Ridgeway Street trial.

Please let me know, and thanks!

I am interested. Jackson does need a grass roots, citizen based, non=governmental supported, self financed organization to give our elected officials the "courage" to do what the city and county needs done. Things like planning, priority based budgeting, investments in people as well as infrastructure. How can I get details about the organizatio? Is it an action oriented group or just a "Pity party", "moan and groan" blog based mouth organ? No disrespect intended...just keeping it real. So somebody.....please tell me about this group

I'm the founder, so I'll give you some details. Yes, Wake Up Jackson is a grassroots, citizen-based, non-governmental supported, self-financed organization. Here's our mission, which is on the Web site's home page: Wake Up Jackson is a civic watchdog group that will be closely monitoring the actions of the Jackson City Government to make sure that the law is upheld and our civil liberties are protected. We need to fight crime, but we do not need to destroy our fair city in the process. Also, here's a statement from the "Wake Up to What?" page: Jackson, it is time to WAKE UP and realize that our rights are slowly being chipped away by an administration that does not seem to fully respect law and order. Frank Melton seems to be under the impression that he is above the law because he is the mayor, but the office of mayor is not a dictatorship. There is a system of checks and balances in place which includes the City Council, and their authority cannot be dismissed just because some of them are not in lockstep with the mayor and care about what it is the best interest of the city. The mayor cannot ignore the wishes of the district attorney, the sheriff, the state attorney general and anyone else who has jurisdiction over him, and officials should not enable him by ignoring his behavior. He cannot pick and choose which laws to obey - they all should be followed, especially since he represents the capitol city of Mississippi. His antics are an embarrassment, and it is time we demand better from him. If not, we risk having to live in a police state where our properties can be taken away and destroyed with no means of recourse. I am determined not to let the group turn into a place to whine. I want it to be an outlet to put words into action by drawing attention to problems in city government. The organization is still in its infancy, and we need all the help we can get so we can go from crawling to walking. Interested citizens use an online group I set up for planning and discussion. If you want to be a part of it, go here and register. Once I approve you, you'll have access to all the discussions. Feel free to go back, read them and add your input.
