Sheriff Malcolm McMillin, now doubling as chief of the Jackson Police Department, has just confirmed to Adam Lynch of the Jackson Free Press that he has named Lee Vance as his assistant chief and second in line to the chief.

Thats great two independent thinking men, but whats does Frank gets out of all of this, a second wave of support for his second mayors term from the Northeast Jacksonians. This is not as cut and dry as it seems somebody's getting the short end of the stick and i think it will be the citizens, Whites get to keep their safe streets and control over a booming downtown and blacks get to keep its black super Hero Frank melton.

NewJack, I can't *imagine* that any Jacksonian would be dumb, or dense, enough to give Melton any credit for either appointing McMillin in desperation or for anything positive that he does. This is good news. Lee vance is a good officer, spokesman, leader and a man, to boot. What's up with Recio though? I won't be happy until Officer Show Business is re-hired and allowed to serve in some capacity. He was the first officer to publicly say, "Frank for the last ... time you're not a trained police officer! That was prophetic and needed saying from within. Lee and Mac, be good leaders and bring back the producer, casting agent, script writer, camera man and police officer.

I forgot to add that Officer Show Business is also a very fine actor. Maybe as No. 2 Lee Vance can avoid dealing directly with Frank which makes McMillan possibly an intermediary also between Frank and likely the guy who will be really running the police department, Lee Vance. Lee Vance may need someone to stand in the way between he and Frank because Lee is probably secretly harboring great hatred for Frank for making his beloved JPD a mockey and laughing stock of Mississippi. Not to mention what Frank did to Shirlene's image, reputation and career. She ought to slap Frank's face before exiting.

Lady, for what it's worth, this is a question black folks have asked for nearly 400 years since coming to America. When whites ask it after black rule or control for a few years it just doesn't do anything for me. I'm amazed that when I read accounts of incidents happening scores and centuries ago that some black persons were asking the same questions that I ask today - why is rank, abject and benign racism so prevalent now or was ever necessary. Some things never change or they change very slowly. Lady we have a place in Mississippi called the Delta where black folks were a majority in many places for years but lost all the elections due to violence, fraud, trickery, laws and a laundry list of evil and illegal acts and deeds to preserve white rule. It was all about race, white rule and white supremacy in those places, and once those people couldn't rule any more many of them left and went where whites could rule. Though I mention the Delta in this instance, this course of action wasn't confined to merely the Delta or Mississippi. We black folks with some sense and knowledge of history aren't going to stop speaking the truth or our minds because it hurts some feelings. I understand your comments but it doesn't take into account the feelings and situations of others who have been abused for years, decades and centuries.

I agree with Lady... this is not a issue of black or white but of competence and ability. I am not looking for a really great black or white person to run the JPD... We had that with Anderson. What we need is a leader qualified to run the department. If that is MAC or not only time can tell. What I am saying is that Mac's ability to do his job well, lead the JPD and create a safer Jackson transcends any talk about race. Besides if you want to talk about race, NEWJACKSON should not resort to name calling "bigot" when it is not a relevant part of this discussion. Thanks, Lady. I like and respect you too. The same is true for IG although we scuffle frequently. I make a great effort to avoid racism or the issue of race in my dealings and situations with people. I usually give people the benefit of all doubts until I have reasons not to. If I wanted to I probably could deceive myself into thinking race and racism are not problems or realities anymore, since to a large degree I can avoid the more base realities of them. The average black person with so little going for him or her sees and lives different reality than the one I live. I'm not going to tell them what they see or don't see. I have sense enough to know I'm blessed to be educated, talented and learned. This doesn't allow me to totally avoid the hurt of racism, classism and overall meanness of people, but I avoid lots of things. The battles I fight now are mostly for others. If I can get my grandchildren to prepare themselves for the realities of life and competition I'd be ready to go away, live my remaining years and die peacefully.

The truth is that there are few relationships existent in MS that don't hold some type of race based dynamic. yeah, it's such a white, NE Jacksonian conspiracy when the streets are safe and downtown is booming. lol Seriously, i'm as much a king frank basher...err...truth-teller as anyone, but on the surface this looks like a good move so i'll be fair and give him the benefit of the doubt and take a wait-and-see approach. mac's a better candidate than the other names that were floating around, and it appears that vance is gonna be in charge of the day-to-day operations, which gives me a glimmer of hope. the downtown development is a whole 'nother conversation. the only two people making money down there are leland speed and david watkins, so that has to be addressed. but, we have to agree that crime (or the perception of it) potentially going down in jxn is good for everyone. the real litmus test will be what happens in south and west jxn in that regard. i'll sign off by reminding everyone that race-based ignorance cuts both ways. as i recall, a predominantly (if not all black) jury let king frank and his court jesters off in that ridgeway st crime when they were clearly guilty. also, we black people must look ourselves in the mirror when we are over 70% of the population but can't decide an election. whites can be blamed for a lot of crap, but not everything...

I'am a history Major at JSU. I'am young but not stupid. In Mississippi its hard to keep the issue of race out of the everyday happenings in this state. Life is compromise Newjack, at your young age it all looks black and white but after a while you'll start to see all shades of grey and the picture gets blurrier. In politics especially, you give some and get some, eventually it works out. For the sheriff chief deal, the important thing is to see if the population benefits from the arrangement, since while the motives can be suspect (some have posted some ideas I'd never have thought of lol) what really matters is whether crime and "harmony" prevails. I have worked with a restaurant that has a good shrimp Kodiak roll. When I first went to work there, I was looked at with suspicion and I felt I did not belong. I did not speak the common language that was spoken and I was often misunderstood. They laughed and yelled at me. We all have to understand that deep down "WE ARE ALL RACIST". For some old men in jail these days it was skin color. For some young men these days it has nothing to do with skin color, but control of the street. A lesson I have learned in my past five months is this: My grandfather was a doctor and he patched up his fellow soldiers on an aircraft carrier named ESSEX in WWII. This man came home and moved to MS From KS in 1955. He came to MS to do better for himself and the family he brought with him. I am so sick and tired of hearing the race issue. I was born in 1975 and missed the entire civil rights era. But my friends and myself lived the second generation of the civil rights movement in the mid 80's. I remember when I was playing with G.I. Joe and Transformers. Some of us have made a good life of what we were given. Some of us have a headstone these days. Some through accidents and others because of health issues. A few people are not here today because they had no one to mentor(AKA kick you in the teeth if you don't do right)! Before we all post our threads and condemn or promote, is there an eight year old in your neighborhood that has a flat tire on his bike. And for two minutes of your time can you fix it? Or will you give the media 20 minutes of your time looking for your missing air compressor?

Cliff, Mac is a politician when it all comes down to it. There was a verbal agreement that Mac would not touch Recio's dumb a** for another couple of months. However, if someone else in command demoted Recio then Mac's hands would be clean of breaking that verbal agreement. Stay tuned for further in this case. What happened to Jones, the 48hr Chief? melton secured Recio and Wright but, left Jones out of the loop? Where is Anderson in the scheme of things? Where is the money for all of these new actions? I supported McMillin for Sheriff of Hinds County and there are many threads that I expressed my support and why. The problem now is that we are attempting to "settle things down" by allowing for maneuvers that are not usual and customary for MS. The problem is melton and there have been too many instances where he could have been fired. Does anyone remember the felony charges that were reduced to misdemeanors? Does anyone remember how long it took Jim Hood to render a decision about issues that could have landed frank in jail? We have allowed these events to take place and now we attempt to debate racism. It is not by accident that the day after Danks pulled the deal for frank and McMillin, the CL headlines was an announcement of fifteen-hundred (1,500) new jail beds. MS' prisions are full of African-Americans. Many are drug/alcohol and related criminal activity secondary to addictions. Let me get back to the point and leave this to a later discussion. We talk about the effects of Role-Modeling in therapy: The visual message for Blacks is that there is no African-American capable of managing this City: That white is both right and might. McLemore and Stokes are probably making commentary secondary to their feeling of shame and guilt because both of them did things in the past that encouraged this action. Things don't just happen. We are experiencing the results of a proccess: African-Americans will have to take more responsibility for being the butt of melton's jokes; jokes that are now resonating in frowns, heartaches, pair and disappointment.

In my case, it's not an excuse. I was raised better than that. Where I was born, in KY, the schools in my town desegregated in 1964, which happens to be the year I was born. Msgrits, I'm glad to hear you as a minister say something about racism. I have long had a great deal of suspicion and distrust of white preachers or other so-called divine white leaders because I knew the Ku Kluk Klan had successfully recruited many white preachers to run the klan. And I knew just as many not in the klan who hated black folks thorougly and furthermore believed it was godly to subjugate and abuse black folks because black were thought to be inhuman or non-human when a stronger case could be made based on deeds that whites were sub-human or non-human. Obviously neither is true though. Likewise, I have always looked at Billy Graham with great distrust and incredulity because for someone so allegedly powerful and godly-annointed he has had so little impact on the race issue or problems of racism, the cancer of our society in America and so many other places. Then to hear conversations with him and Nixon about other groups of people that weren't nice or godly. I have never believed Billy Graham was anything special because I know of nothing significant he has done to ease race tensions or loosen the grip that racism has had on white people. In my view, he wanted to maintain the status quo as much as any racist politican. Show me I'm wrong if you can! I have been invited to many white churches but I always refused to go. I have gone just about every place else with white folks but not church on Sunday, the most segregated time in America, some claim. I'm not seeking another opportunity by these comments either. A friend of mines had the police called on him for trying to integrate churches.

I'm with you Ray. I regret all the pigheadedness that white people had back in the day. I also know that some white people still harbor those feelings today which is a shame. Now to get back on post....Lt. Jesse Robinson was just named Commander of Precinct Two and Sgt. Goodrum was named Commander of Precinct 4. We will have to see how these changes work out...

Your not hurting my feelings ray, your just showing the hypocrisies of religion. Christianity is pretty much a European creation that was spread to the other parts of the world anyway. Just like forcing a people to speak your language, it was used to "colonize" the world. If Gutenberg wouldn't have invented that darn printing press we wouldn't have all these problems.

We are clicking on the same page Donna. Whatever Mac does really doesn't add up to a pile of beans until he is approved by the council. I wonder how the confirmation will turn out. Marshand can't vote or I wouldn't think he could vote simply because he works for the Sheriff's Department. Stokes is against him. Mclemore seems more against him than for him at this time. Barret-Simon is on the fence with her decision. So then you have Tillman who is in Franks right pocket and Bluntson who is in Frank's left pocket. Then you have Weil which is for Mac. It appears that it could be a 3-3 vote. Who will be the tie breaker. It is usually the mayor but I don't know if he can be the tie breaker on this. I doubt Crisler can be the tie breaker with his ties to the Sheriff's Dept. I guess we will see in time...

Ray, Lt. Robinson is a good guy and he had been over the traffic division for a while. Sgt. Goodrum is a good Sgt. He has worked in Precinct's One and Two as a sergeant. This will be both of their first big assignments. Hopefully they can make a difference.....

Lady, I'm going to go out a limb an guess you are not a brown person. I could totally be wrong. But if you are an Anglo sister then I'd urge you to call your brown childhood friends and asked them how they experienced growing up in the very same environment. They might not tell you the truth because they don't want you to be hurt but then again they might. I think it's wonderful that your family taught you that all people are created equal. That's a lovely beginning but it's not nearly enough. Reference what Ladd said.

But what a slap that was at the citizens and police officers of Jackson on Melton's part. Just appoint someone for three days who will approve the controversial raises.
