DiFatta Donates Evers Painting to Boyd Elementary

See a full gallery of photos of the reception here.

Jackson artist Anthony DiFatta, who illustrates for the Jackson Free Press, last week presented a painting he did of civil rights hero Medgar Evers to Boyd Elementary School in Fondren. At a reception honoring the donation, attended by Charles Evers, Gov. William Winter, Rev. Ed King and other luminaries, the school's choir performed, and several fifth-grade students stood and gave tributes to Evers.

The school was also holding a mock election for the best cafeteria food to teach the importance of the right to vote, which Evers fought to bring to African Americans before he was murdered at his Jackson home. Here, DiFatta climbs a ladder to hang his painting; the gift was facilitated by the Fondren Renaissance Foundation. (See a gallery of photos from the reception at jacksonfreepress.com/jfpgallery.)

This is truly a positive mark in the right direction for these youngsters. Difatta deserves a big THANK YOU for this painting! Hopefully this gift to the school will remind Charles to stay out of these recent messes with such a disrespect and disregard for the basic rights of othere - those positions that Meg lived and died for.

Woah... when'd Fondren take over Northside Drive? Boyd Elementary is way out of what I thought Fondren encompassed.

I think they consider it North Fondren, or NoFo. ;-) Ultimately, it's the painting that matters here, and cheers to Fondren Renaissance for helping make this gift happen. It was a great day.

Wait... you mean I lived in "NoFo" for 20 something years? I didn't know that. :)

Fondren "technically" reaches to Northside, and the folks who live around Boyd Elem. are very grateful to Tony and the FRF for their support of an institution that is a big part of our community. FRF adopted Boyd Elem. a few years back, and now Broadmeadow UMC, Mississippi 2020, and the Broadmeadow Neighborhood Association (BNA) are also volunteering their time and energy to the school and the kids. More info will be forthcoming on this work as it happens on the BNA website www.topoffondren.com

Also, I should add that Dr. Helen Barnes was instrumental in making this gift happen. Now THERE's an amazing woman.
