Well, I guess this is a compliment to the JFP's editorial cartoonist, Darren Schwindaman. Today's Marshall Ramsey cartoon copies Darren's cartoon of two weeks ago almost directly, except using Joe Camel instead of the Marlboro man/cowboy. I'll try to get a PDF of Darren's version up today, site problems allowing.

I haven't had time due to the issue deadline, but I plan to. This is a simply bizarre thing to see. I know he reads the paper; he's made several references, subtle and not-so-subtle, to the JFP in h is cartoon, which we're very proud of. This, though, I'm not proud of. I can't even imagine what they would be doing about now if the tables were turned, and Marshall's came first, then Darren's. I do think an apology is in order from Goliath on this one.

I never said "plagiarism." I will say, though, that–with writing–if you can put two pieces next to each other and they are so remarkably similar with just a few words changed, it is never acceptable to just say you thought of the very same idea. And, certainly, if he did pick up the JFP of two weeks ago ("Love issue"), it's really hard to have an excuse for doing such a similar cartoon. Even if you had had a similar idea, you look for a different one if someone beat you to it. He's good enough that he doesn't need to look like he's copying somebody else.

What we keep hearing about this, by the way, is how much more clever Darren's column was, being that he used the Marlboro Man in the Brokeback-Barbour joke. It just doesn't work well with Joe Camel. That's the bizarre part to me: If you *hadn't* seen Darren's cartoon, and you are as clever as Mr. Ramsey, wouldn't you have thought of the Marlboro Man (the actual cowboy!?!) before Joe Camel? Joe Camel seems like a weak second-string replacement when you think about it. Someone pointed this out to me last night when a bunch of folks were sitting around talking about this, and it just doesn't make sense. Weird-o.

I'll say one thing that's gonna get me booed: I didn't realize, when I saw Darren's cartoon, that the cowboy was the Marlboro Man. So I didn't get the punchline. With Joe Camel, I got it. If what happened with Ramsey was subconscious, I could see him going "If I drew the Marlboro Man, folks might not know who it was..." Cheers, TH

Speaking of spoofs a certain competitors magazine, i use the term magazine loosely as well as competitors, but they have a spoof complete with camel toe as opposed to camel joe, and it ain't pretty. Not even artsy it's really just sort of tasteless and not funny. Doesn't make gays look good either.

BTW, I wanted to report back that Mr. Ramsey has never answered my e-mail about this. I simply wrote and ask him what happened. Also, I spoke yesterday to the Youth Leadership Jackson class. One of the young men, who attends St. Joe where Darren went, asked me about this cartoon-gate and said that people at this school were talking about Darren's idea getting a second go-around in the Ledge. He asked what we were going to do about it. I told them I believed that "public embarrassment" would suffice. I also mentioned that it was likely that I couldn't imagine what they would have done if one of our cartoonists had copied one of Mr. Ramsey's jokes. Of course, that won't happen. They liked my answer.
