Agnew: Could Johnson yet depart with dignity, class?

One of Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr.'s most statesmanlike moments came on election night, when he realized his time in office was up.

Instead of asking for recounts and delaying the inevitable, Johnson came out early to concede to Frank Melton, a former TV executive who faces token opposition in next month's general election.

I watched live television coverage and concluded that this might have been the mayor's finest hour, winning with dignity, losing with the same amount of class.

I suppose I should have realized it was too good to be true.

Since that fine hour, Mayor Johnson has returned to his same eclectic self. The puzzle that is Harvey Johnson has once again risen and demonstrated why voters not only asked him to leave, but ordered him to. Few incumbents experience a trouncing like Johnson received on May 3.
