C-L: Voters will weigh candidates' leadership, business sense

In economic development, mayors are as critical as bankers in making things happen.

The Clarion-Ledger reports:

They have to know how their constituents feel about business, which takes communication.

And they should surround themselves with smart, quick-thinking people who can make hard decisions when necessary.

Voters will soon have to consider which candidates possess the qualities that business leaders and economic development experts say make leaders, as they prepare to elect mayors throughout the state over the next two months. The party primaries are May 3, with the party nominees and independents facing off in a general election June 7.

Duane O'Neill, president the past 12 years of the MetroJackson Chamber of Commerce, has worked with mayors in nine cities including Jackson.
