Dr. S was 3-3 in his college football predictions this week, but he's NOT SATISFIED with .500 mediocrity. If he was willing to put up with being good enough, he would have kept his job as a WorldCom accountant.

Also, Dr. S quit saying Hinds would win, so naturally the Eagles finally won, beating Co-Lin 36-7. Dr. S would claim that as a moral victory, but he just forgot Hinds was playing on Saturday.

Dr. S predicted Mississippi State would edge Troy State 35-30. The outcome wasn't nearly as entertaining: State won 11-8. State has trouble and that starts with T and that rhymes with P and that spells pathetic.

My Ole Miss pick: Rebels 35, Ar-Kansas State 17. Ole Miss won 52-17. But before you make reservations in Atlanta, Colonel Reb, stop sucking on that hip flask and check out the schedule: Saturday, at Alabama; Oct. 26 at Arkensaw; Nov. 2 vs. Auburn; Nov. 9 at Georgia; Nov. 23 at LSU; and Nov. 28 vs. Messed-Up State. Dr. S sees at least 3 losses awaiting the Elis. Pack your bags for Shreveport.

Dr. S said Southern Miss would devour South Florida 45-3. Harsh reality: USF 16, USM 13. Who knew that USM recruits its kickers at the same place as Florida State? But USM has problems with its rushing offense and its rushing defense, is fumble prone and still hasn't found an effective quarterback. Unless all of that changes pronto, Hattiesburg won't be Conference USA's titletown this season.

Jackson State was supposed to beat Alabama State 49-43. Instead, the Hornets put a serious kink in JSU's championship aspirations by stinging the Tigers 24-20 down in Mobile. JSU had the stats, but ASU had the points. The Tigers' punting still stinks (3 punts for an average of 25.3 yards) and that's all on JSU coach Robert Hughes. Memo to JSU: You should have hired L.C. Cole instead of letting him go to Alabama State.

Dr. S said Mississippi Valley would beat Southern University. Instead the Jaguars kept the Delta Devils winless in the SWAC 19-16. On the good news side, Dr. S correctly predicted Alcorn State would pummel Prairie View 33-13.

Elsewhere, Belhaven edged Campbellsville 24-21, Mary Hardin-Baylor mauled Mississippi College 39-24, Arkansew Tech denied Delta State 24-17, and Millaps clipped Centre 14-7.
