Weekly Look Back & Look Forward: Heading to Week 7

College football finishes rounding the midway point this weekend. Last week was great for some and painful to watch for others.

If you missed anything, check out the recap in this week's JFP or http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/news/2012/oct/10/triumph-and-tragedy-halfway-point/">with this link.

The big winner this week was Mississippi State. The Bulldogs are 5-0 after their win over Kentucky and only need one more win to become bowl eligible.

From here on out things are going to start getting a lot tougher for MSU starting this week with Tennessee. The Bulldogs are defiantly at top 25 team on defense but their offense leaves you wondering about ranking MSU too high.

Mississippi State can get bogged down on offense and be a bit sloppy at times. I worry about this when they begin play much tougher competition. That doesn't mean MSU can't stay undefeated but they need to clean up the mistakes on the offensive side of the ball.

The final six games of the season will not be a cakewalk for the Bulldogs but this team should go to a bowl game for a third straight year. If MSU wants to stay undefeated, the offense must start playing better.

Mississippi State Bulldogs

Tennessee will be the toughest test so far for Mississippi State. The Auburn game finally gave the Bulldogs a win over an SEC West team but the Volunteers are much better than the Tigers have been this season.

This game will feature Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray and his talented receivers against the Bulldogs outstanding secondary. The Volunteers can put up a ton of points but also give up a ton of points.

Tennessee has struggled in the second half of SEC games so far this year and MSU should not worry if the Volunteers get off to a fast start. The Bulldogs just have to keep the game close going into the second half.

Mississippi State should win this game but I would not be surprised if Tennessee pulled off the upset.

Ole Miss Rebels

This weekend the Rebels have to get over their heartbreaking loss to Texas A&M last week. Ole Miss bowl hopes hinge on defeating an Auburn team that lost to a reeling Arkansas team this past Saturday.

This is a winnable game for the Rebels. The Tigers are in total disarray and the loss to Arkansas have many on The Plains questioning the current coaching staff.

Ole Miss should be able to score enough to win this game against a stout Auburn defense. The Rebels defense should be able to contain the inept Tiger offense.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Southern Miss fans are about ready for this season to be over. The Golden Eagles are 0-5 and things don't seem to be getting better on offense or defense.

USM faces Central Florida this week and unless everything comes together this team looks headed to 0-6 on the season. The Golden Eagles have been plagued by injuries but it doesn't mean this team shouldn't have won a game yet.

UCF is supposed best team in the East division of C-USA but are not bowl eligible. The Knights won their first C-USA last week in a 40-20 rout of East Carolina.

Jackson State Tigers

Jackson State faces a stiff test on the road this week against Alabama State. The Tigers are 2-4 and face the 4-2 Hornets.

JSU chances at a SWAC East title seem a long shot right now but a win in this game will get the Tigers right back into the mix. Last week Alabama State defeated Texas Southern 45-0.

Alcorn State Braves

Alcorn State faces the best team in the SWAC this season, Alabama A&M. The Braves are also falling out of the East race and need a win badly in this game.

ASU might need a miracle to win this week.

Alabama A&M 45 ASU 17

Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils

There is a good chance that Mississippi Valley gets their second win of the season this week. The Delta Devils face winless Grambling State.

The closest game for the Tigers all year has been against Alcorn State to begin the year. The Tigers lost to the Braves 22-21 and haven't really been in a close game since.

I have to think the Delta Devils will be in this game until the end.

Delta State Statesmen

The Statesmen are going for their first home win of the season this week against West Georgia. Delta State's only wins of the season has come on the road.

This is also a chance for DSU to get their first conference win of the season as well. West Georgia still hasn't won a conference game at 0-2.

At some point, Delta State hasn't to win a conference and home game this season. I don't see why it can't be this weekend.

Millsaps Majors

After suffering their first loss of the season, the Majors look to get back in to winning this week against Sewanee. Millsaps is playing their second conference game of the year after already winning their first game.

Last week, Sewanee lost to Centre 10-7 a team the Majors defeated 33-16. This is a game that Millsaps should win.

Mississippi College Choctaws

Something has to give this week as the 1-4 Choctaws hit the road to face 0-5 Howard Payne. Mississippi College is also looking for their first conference win of the year as well.

MC could really use a win and this is a game that is winnable.

Belhaven Blazers

Belhaven was on a two game winning streak until last week when the Blazers fell 13-10 to Kentucky Christian. This week the Blazers face winless Bluefield College.

The Blazers are 1-1 in conference play and this is a conference game. Belhaven is at home and the better team, which should equal a win.
