Ole Miss out spent MSU & USM in Football Recruiting for 2010 and 2011

Football recruiting is as competitive as the game played on the field. Recruiting has become bigger and bigger in the digital age with sports sites building pages to follow top prospects.

The amount of money spent on recruiting varies from university to university. ESPN gathered data from every Division I school, except for private schools & Pennsylvania school (state law does not require public schools to disclose data), on how much money was spent the last two years on recruiting.

Since the data posted was only for Division I schools, there is no information for SWAC schools on this list. The three Division I schools from Mississippi (Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Southern Miss) are included.

Ole Miss spent more on recruiting than either MSU or USM in the last two year. The Rebels spent $340,670 in 2010 and $495,233 in 2011.

Mississippi State was next on the list with $244,024 spent in 2010 and $306,469 spent in 2011. While Ole Miss spent $154,563 more from 2010 to 2011 while the Bulldogs spent just $62,445 more in the same time span.

Southern Miss spent much less on recruiting than either Ole Miss or Mississippi State. The Golden Eagles spent $157,227 in both 2010 and 2011.

Those numbers from all three schools might be misleading since there is no true formula for disclosing data. All three schools might have spent more money than reported depending on how they figure up recruiting expenditures.

So how does Mississippi’s three Division I school stack up to their competition. Here is the rundown of schools in the SEC and Conference USA and how much they spent on recruiting in the last two years.

Tennessee's number is pretty darned interesting. I'm guessing they reported it differently, but if they really did spend that much in the last few years there's an argument they didn't get much to show for it.

I thought about how much Tennessee spent. My first thought is they spent more trying to combat Lane Kiffin leaving and Bruce Pearl issue.

Meaning they spent more to combat negative media stories. Again there is no set formula so it is hard to tell and Tennessee would never tell where they spent the money or on what.

I just know Tennessee over the last two to three years has been under NCAA investigation. Gut feeling they were trying to fight up stream against bad press.
