Clarion-Ledger Executive Editor Needs JFP Nation's Help

All, I just learned that, on Tuesday, newish Clarion-Ledger Executive Editor Brian Tolley, brought in from Louisiana or somewhere, asked the staff to help "folks who are writing ads for our new subscription model ..." (presumably the dumb charge-for-web stories idea). Apparently those "folks" are probably far from Jackson in some corporatey cubicle, and Tolley doesn't know enough about Jackson to tell them the following, as reported by Gannett Blog ( http://bit.ly/MEDdRU">http://bit.ly/MEDdRU). Tolley's verbatim list:

  1. What is your town famous for?
  2. What are the local sayings unique to your community?
  3. Is there a famous landmark not for tourists, but for locals?
  4. Who are the personalities known by everyone in town?
  5. Who are your local heroes -- and why?
  6. Who are your local villains?
  7. What events only happen in your community? (charity events, yearly runs/walks not associated with national programs)

My suggestion is that we help him out. Post below and answer the questions for him. We might even run them in the paper sometime soon.

Enjoy. Meanwhile here's your moment of Zen.

BTW, @djschwin gets credit for snapping that image and tweeting it around because the Ledger pulled it down and replaced it with a correct package.

OK, I'll try:

What is your town famous for?

1.) Our roads.

2.) We might be the "Jackson" in that Johnny & June Cash song.

What are the local sayings unique to your community?

"Farish Street should be done this year."

Is there a famous landmark not for tourists, but for locals?

Umm... CS's? Freelon's?

Who are the personalities known by everyone in town?

Sore subject? I think the C-L just let half of them go via buyouts.

I think at this point we're pretty much left with Nic Lott and Burt Case, assuming one isn't actually the superhero disguise of the other.

Who are your local heroes -- and why?

William Winter, because he's awesome.

Who are your local villains?

Did a national newspaper company seriously just ask who are "local villains" are?

We only have a double-AA "villain" team here, so nobody special. One time we had Lex Luthor's younger son Chip Luthor for a few weeks once he got off the DL.

Oh, and I guess everyone pretty much agrees on Tate Reeves.

What events only happen in your community? (charity events, yearly runs/walks not associated with national programs)

I guess there's a lot these:

  • Mal's St. Paddy's Day Parade (gawd I hope I got that right from memory)
  • JFP ChickBall (yay!)
  • Best of Jackson (yay!)
  • Mississippi Blues Marathon
  • Throw Back Your Litter Ledger Day

Is there a famous landmark not for tourists, but for locals? Fishing on the Pearl river, below the Spillway

Who are the personalities known by everyone in town? Kenny Stokes

Who are your local heroes -- and why? Jim Barksdale - for trying to make a difference

Who are your local villains? Frank Melton Bernie Ebbers - any tech company in Jackson will be looked at suspiciously, because of him

What events only happen in your community? (charity events, yearly runs/walks not associated with national programs) Sweet Potato Queens in whatever parade they're in this year...

so, thinking about how we eliminated the 3 day waiting period for marry in in MS, maybe we could use the Johnny Cash tune as a slogan. Wanna get married in a fever? Come to Jackson

Local sayings - we hate Yankees, even those from Louisiana. Our villains - Jackson is a snake's next of Right Wing extremists who copy each anti-Constitutional state act produced in Louisiana and Alabama. Our state has the highest DUI rate in the nation, but these folks pass a law increasing beer content to 8 percent! They cut budgets for public schools, mental health, care of the poor and elderly, but fork over $380 million to a foreign-owned automaker (Nissan) to compete against American auto plants. So far, each supposedly local job created at Nissan cost the state taxpayers $84,000, assuming all the workers are legal and not from Alabama, Tennessee. Our GOP villains drop-kicked the 58 percent of voters who defeated the Personhood Proposition and immediately passed one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the nation. These "adults" including Gov. Philbert Bryant claim to believe "all life is precious, comes from God" but has executed several inmates in a matter of weeks. Our precious politicians gave a peanut farmer a $1 million grant (free taxpayer money) to hire 3 new workers. It hands out multi-million cash gifts to privately-owned corporations, which come to Mississippi to avoid the sin of getting business, construction or expansion loans from an outside source. We have a particular group which allows 2/3s of all state businesses to escape tax payments, no corporate state tax for roads, bridges, schools, healthcare, etc.
