LIBERTY, Miss. (AP) — The remains of a fallen World War II soldier have returned to Mississippi after more than 70 years.

News outlets report James Samuel Smith's body was brought back to his home in Liberty on Saturday. His remains were discovered in 2012 on a South Pacific island. DNA linked the remains to Smith.

Smith, who was born in 1924, joined the Marines and left for service in August 1942. Family members said they received their last telegram in October of that year.

In that letter, Smith said he was headed to battle on the Gilbert Islands. It's believed he died in November 1943 during what was called the "Assault on Beach Red Two." He was 19 years old.

A memorial service is planned for Monday.
