— Jackson couples Adam and Katherine Martin, and Matthew and Lacey Buck partnered together two weeks ago to open Capitol Nutrition in the Regions Plaza in downtown Jackson (210 E. Capitol St.). The new nutrition club offers shakes, smoothies and energy teas to provide healthy breakfast and lunch options.

Capitol Fitness offers 45 different shakes and smoothies flavored with powders to taste like Butterfinger, brownie batter, wedding cake and other popular flavors without any actual candy or other unhealthy ingredients inside. The energy teas, which contain no sugar, are made from orange pico, green and black tea, and come in peach, lemon and raspberry flavors.

In addition to its food and drink options, Capitol Nutrition also provides free workout sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Customers can come in and sit down with a staff member for a free wellness profile, in which factors such as muscle-to-fat ratio, age and metabolism are used to come up with a custom nutrition plan tailored to the customer's needs.

"Our focus is on nutrition and healthy options for everyone," Adam Martin said. "I've managed to lose 38 pounds, and my wife has developed plenty of muscle tone through the plans we've come up with, and we want to share them with the whole community."

Capitol Nutrition is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call Adam Martin at 601-405-1625, Katherine Martin at 601-383-7370 or find Capitol Nutrition on Facebook.

Jackson Culinary Concierge Opens for Business

Alivia Townsend, the owner and chef at Jackson restaurant Norma Ruth's, decided to take her business in a different direction after it closed last Wednesday to seek out a new location. Two weeks ago, Townsend began an experiment while Norma Ruth's was still in operation. After the idea proved successful, she started her new business venture, Jackson Culinary Concierge, which opens today in the former Norma Ruth's building and kitchen.

Jackson Culinary Concierge offers freshly cooked meals to businesses, offices, hospitals, large gatherings such as weddings, and groups of six people or more.

"We have fine dining, soul food, salads and plenty of other things you can't ordinarily get delivered in Jackson," Townsend said. "This is for people who have trouble or can't get out of the office to have a good lunch, to give them good options other than things like pizza. A lot of people I've talked to have been really enthusiastic to have something like this since I started it."

Jackson Culinary Concierge will offer a different menu every two weeks based on community requests. Popular items in the first two weeks have included items such as lobster rolls, New Orleans-style crawfish bread and a surf-and-turf burger that Townsend added as a result of a competition for customers to see who could come up with the most popular burger idea. The winner received a free lunch and had their burger added to the menu as a prize.

"I'm making community outreach a focus of this, to find out what it is that people want," Townsend said. "I'm also looking into getting a contract with Nissan and Comcast so that I can even offer service beyond Jackson if this proves popular enough."

Delivery service is available Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or for special events by appointment, available seven days a week. To place an order or to learn more, call 601-506-9636.

LurnyD's Grille Named Best Food Truck in Mississippi

National food news website The Daily Meal recently compiled a list of the best food trucks in the United States, and LurnyD's Grille in Jackson took home the honor for Mississippi.

Lauren Davis opened LurnyD's in 2013, becoming one of the first food trucks in Jackson. The menu often features items such as the goober burger, which is topped with peanut butter and bacon; the French onion dip burger, which features French onion dip, potato chips and pickles; the sunrise burger, made with bacon, cheese and a fried egg; and the sloppy jalopy, topped with cheese, sloppy Joe meat and deep-fried jalapenos. LurnyD's has veggie patties substitutions available, as well as hand-cut fries for $2 and sloppy fries, which are topped with sloppy Joe meat and homemade pimento cheese, for $4. The menu at LurnyD's rotates on a regular basis, and the food truck also frequently has weekly specials not listed on the menu.

For a full menu or the food truck's location on a particular day, call 601-906-9480, follow LurnyD's on Twitter and Facebook, or visit LurnyD's website.
