Lt. Gov Sides with House Leader in Bill Reading Dispute

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves is siding with a fellow Republican in a dispute over how the Mississippi Legislature conducts business.

Reeves filed papers Tuesday asking the state Supreme Court to dismiss a lawsuit filed in March by Democratic state Rep. Jay Hughes of Oxford.

Hughes sought to block Republican House Speaker Philip Gunn from using a superfast setting to have a computer voice read bills out loud.

The state constitution gives any lawmaker the right to have a bill read aloud before a final vote. House Democrats asked for the reading because they believed their concerns were being ignored by the Republican supermajority.

Gunn and Reeves argue that courts have no say in how the Legislature operates.

The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in the lawsuit July 19.
