MANASSAS, Va. (AP) — An Army staff sergeant charged with killing his wife and a northern Virginia police officer who was on her first day on the job is being held without bail.

Pentagon worker Ronald Hamilton appeared by video Monday on charges over the slaying of his wife and requested court-appointed counsel.

Prince William County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Judge Lisa Baird ordered him held without bail and appointed public capital defender Ed Ungvarsky over prosecutors' objections. Another appearance in General District Court on charges related to the slaying of Officer Ashley Guindon is set for later in the morning.

Prosecutor Paul Ebert has said he'll likely seek the death penalty against Hamilton. He's charged with capital murder, first-degree murder and malicious wounding.

Police have said Hamilton and his wife argued Saturday, she called 911, he fatally shot her, then fired at arriving officers.
