New Albany Cop Suspended Pending UM-LSU Assault Investigation

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — A New Albany police officer is suspended with pay during an investigation about whether he punched a spectator at Saturday's Ole Miss-LSU football game.

The Oxford Eagle reports the officer's name was not released. He worked part-time to help the University of Mississippi Police Department provide security at the game.

University Police Chief Tim Potts says in a news release Monday that violent behavior is not tolerated on campus, and the school asked the FBI to investigate. He says the request should make it clear that Ole Miss is taking the situation seriously.

Jason Pack, spokesman for the FBI in Mississippi, says agents are in touch with university police. Pack says they will review the incident and consult with the U.S. attorney about "the appropriate course of action."
